Chanter/Cipher or Chanter/Wizard?
Or something else entirely? Chanter just seems like a fun RP option for my main on a first playthrough, assuming your character is supposed to be the charismatic leader type like usual. Multiclassing might be a mistake, but I usually enjoy going wide for utility on my MC while the rest of the party specializes more for specific roles.

Chanters are rather useful at anything.

Chanter Wizard is neat because you can use the Chanter to work around the wizard's limitations, for example Beckoner / Evoker can be an evoker wizard with a pet army, where as an Evoker cannot use any conjuration normally. It's also good because after you run out of wizard spells, you'll still get chanter spells over time meaning you can cast all fight.

I'm not sure on Cipher as I have not tried them yet. I assume it's a similar thing

Beckoner isn't a great summoning subclass for the chanter. It increases the summon costs while decreasing their durations so you essentially only have a pet up ~50% of the time.

The best chanter subclass for pets (or in general actually) is troubador.

As for chanter dualclassing, chanter dualclasses well with anything. It is the most versatile class in the game. And it doesn't get hurt too much by dualclassing, basically all you miss out on is an upgrade to the chanter's best attack spell and the resource replenishment spell (but a cipher is better for that anyway).

They're both good choices. Chanter wizard is probably more versatile, but chanter cipher can be an insane combo depending on your sub classes, like a skald-soul blade is crazy. Soul blade is a good multi class cipher cus you don't have to spend a lot of abilities on cipher spells, cus you'll only need a small handful and mostly use your soul blade anyway

Evoker wizard and chanter is also super powerful. I like skald for multi class cus seriously the two invocations "at the sound of his voice..." And "the thunder rolled like waves..." Both offensive and either stun or paralyze (and just use the stun one on guys who are resistant to dex afflictions) can allow you to stun lock groups of people and fire them off constantly cus the reduced chant cost.
Also "hell crashed upon the shield" when it's upgraded to its second tier is insanely powerful. That reduced armour rating will save your ass, and you can do it to groups of people and it will last forever on bosses because of how many times you'll be hitting them.

Chanter goes with everything and in my opinion is great as a secondary class. That said pure wizard is really really good and loosing on on 8th and 9th level spells is something to really consider.

Chanter/Cipher is pretty good RP-wise, just in terms of reading minds and spirits and souls, and as noted chanter goes with pretty much anything. There are also three recruitable wizards, one with Chanter/Wizard as an option. Aloth is on the first island, and he can be a single-class wizard or m/c into fighter or rogue. One of the new companions can be a ranger/wizard, which is an interesting combo if you like laying down control effects at a distance. And one of the sidekicks can be a wizard, wizard/druid, or wizard/chanter. Just some other things to consider.

I personally don't like mixing two caster classes that much, it feels like they are a little more powerful either as single classes (for faster growth and higher power levels) or as a mix with martial classes so they can pull more weight in combat. I'm not saying it's not viable, I just didn't have the best experience with it.
If you want a chanter mixed with something, I would consider going for chanter/paladin. Paladins in Pillars are not your standard goody-two-shoes, they are a very interesting class rp-wise, and a very good fit for chanter.
Ciphers is also an excellent option both mechanically and rp-wise thanks to their unique abilities. They go work very well both as a single class (Ascendant is amazing) or in a mix with a martial class (like a rogue or a ranger for example).
