Is there a legit peaceful way to resolve the Bardatto vs Valera feude?

*Spoilers for the Family Pride questline*

I was dissapointed with the "peaceful" outcome, after doing some quests for each family, I got to the point where I could ask them to settle the feude and act as an intermediary. The talks turn out fine and the Bardattos agree to lend them 6 ships in a business deal...

But immediately after, talking to the Valera's triggers a conversation where they ask you to help one of their people, if you say youll do it, Bardatto's are instantly hostile upon entering the study, but if you refuse to help the Valera's are instantly hostile. This effectively kills any further quests, I had only done a single one for the Valera's and they said theyd have more work in time, but now I cant do them because I cant speak to them without being rammed into choosing one family over the other.

Did I do something wrong? While I commend the realism that the "treuce" would have a great chance of crumbling anyway, its just not realistic that the Valera's, a respected noble family, would commit mass murder by killing you and your four companions, simply because you didnt want to do a job for them. Its absurd. Is there are specific way to do this questline that doesnt block you out from further quests?

I finished that one, not too long I dont think. I did the quest, turned it into the Bardatto lady, then probably 20min later came back to do the peace talks.

Seems to be a lot of people with issues doing this quest, if you search for "Bardatto" you'll find a few of them. Don't know if anyone has worked out the correct path through and I haven't done the quest myself :)
