So apparently you need a metaphysics of 9 to get the "best" outcome of saving most of the dragon's soul. Aloth meets that requirement, but it seems the game insists on you using the player character. Is this intentional, or is it a bug? I'm leaning towards "bug" because the game will let me inspect the wardstone with a check of 5, and my player character's metaphysics level is 2.

You companions skills are never used directly. Most skill checks give you a bonus depending on the total of your companions skills (breakpoints are 1/2/4/7/11/16) and there's rare checks that only use yours

That's a bit strange considering you do choose companions directly during the story scenes.

During the parchment events you can use them, yes. But not in conversations

You still get bonuses in conversations from your party members, though. You can mouse over the '*' next to the displayed skill to see how much you're being assisted by your party.

Yeah i had this issue with an encoded letter that i apparently couldn't just pass to someone else and say "you try".
Kills the roleplay of having a party in the 1st place.

So it does (only checks you've already met). I have a total of 8, and the game will let me leave, so I can frolic about and come back later.

Is there anywhere else to see this value? The character screen only displays the base character value.

When you're leveling a character, it will tell you your score and the party bonus score, as far as I know no other way to check, which sucks.
Weirdly it will tell you the same info when leveling a companion, like you care what their total is with party bonus :D

And even into events you not always can use companions, sometimes you're locked with MC only. Game is very illogical in that.

It's reasonable with dialogue skill checks, not so with knowledge and completely unreasonable with STR/athletic checks (like releasing girl from jungle vines grasp - why I can't ask Eder to do it?).

Well that's anoying! Aloth only had 8 in metaphysics when I tried it so I reloaded thinking I'd come back later when Aloth has 9. But that is wasted time then?

You can get +1 from sleeping at the inn at Nekataka and find drugs for +2, if Aloth has 8 then that's another +4 so you're most of the way there

You also should have +1 from training.

I just retrained my character, put everything into metaphysics, did the quest, then retrained and put my normal points in.

Retraining is buggy atm though.

Doesn't retraining delete your watcher skills and training? I wouldn't go near it

It deleted one of my Watcher skills (the healing one, it left me the fear one). Never took training, but it probably does. Hence why I warned about the buggyness. Really wanted to go that route for the quest though.
