Level Scaling (Upwards only)
Is the option for "Level Scaling for All" enemies + "Upwards Only" really working as intended in that encounters are ONLY scaled upwards to my level but not scaled downwards?

Because it's a bit confusing that i don't have any difficulty indicators for quests or enemies since i started a new game with both options enabled. But the option for difficulty markers themself are still active.

Right now it looks more like everything just gets scaled to my level - even if it's at a higher level (which is not what i was looking for). And until now there isn't any encounter which seem to be at a higher difficulty than my level (but it's still pretty early in the current walkthrough).

This questions was answered in another thread. The devs mentioned that they remove the level indicator if you activate level scaling and i can say that it works. Just sail to the northern isles there are many fights with enemies with 80-100 deflection = high level where my party had only ~50 accuracy back then which means every fight lasted several minutes hacking away slices of hp while the enemies could easily destroy your party in a few hits.

level scaling doesnt work, i got this option enabled and enemies still are low level.

Unless you really go out of your way or rush through the story, you'll be hard pressed to find content that's much higher level than you

What it looks like is if you put level scaling on then they are scaled both up and down to your level. Don't click that if you want up only.

If you want it scaled up only that's the only thing you check. The other box leave at default.

So you’re basically playing the game just for the story now, right?

So I put level scaling on full, ran to the first cave at level 1, the boar outside was level 1 and the beetle inside was level 2.
Started again, full scaling and now level 4 with level 4 Eder. The boar outside was level 1 and the beetle inside was level 2.
Maybe scaling is disabled for this area, or maybe it's just broken :/

Apparently level scaling works in a 6-levels wide window. So if you have scaling enabled and are currently, let's say, on 9-nth level, than your strongest enemies will be scaled down to level 12 and weakest - up to 6. So yeah, you will still encounter low-levels, just not too low.

That makes sense for what I observed above, still giving enemies a 10 accuracy/defense difference. Would be nicer if it was 0 down, 3 up

Considering it removes difficulty indicators, I was expecting a 1 level window on my average party level or something similar

If it works like that, no wonder the combat is garbage, upward scaling should scale the weakest enemies to your current level and the rest upper still based on that, at least on PotD. Are u telling me I have to wait, maybe months, for the patches to come out to play this game with any resemblance of challenge? Theres too much talking in the game and not enough variety, it has 0 replay value to me. Why isn't it finished on release. This game had long-ass beta, yet some skills are still awfully broken like the wizards concussive missiles, one-shotting even bosses with collateral. Frustrating beyond belief.

That makes sense but apparently the game is still very easy despite this.
I cannot play the game just stomping mobs around and reading the story. I need the challenge, I need to earn my battles.
I will wait till this is patched. Today is the first day I don’t touch the game since release and I’m willing to give it a month if required. It’s not like we get many crpg these days. Better wait and delay gratification with full experience

Is Obsidian aware of the difficulty issues with this game? Did they acknowledge that they will be patching the difficulty to give players a more sustained experience?

It is quite easy actually.

You are directed toward Dunnage quite early and islands next to it and to Fort Deadlight have stuff level 13 on them. Which I killed at level 5 :) on PotD without scaling.

If I were one of the people rallying for greater difficulty, I would withhold my enthusiasm on this one. The difficulty of the game is generally in line with other games of the genre, as far as I can say, and suits the majority of players. I dout that devs will start an overhaul for the sake of 5% of players risking potentially alienate 95%. It’s a business first and foremost.

If this is the case - then how is the game actually deciding which content ist going to be scale upwards? Because the first box is supposed to be a filter for the scaled content (none, critical path, all).

On the other hand i wonder if it's really supposed that you can enable upward scaling without selecting any level scaling at all - but that also could be just an oversight.

But well, guess i just keep playing this time. Don't want to restart over and over again ;)

I don't think I've been directed to Dunnage at any point so far and have been too caught up with quests from Neketaka to get to the Fort after getting some Principi colours from Dereo :(
