Pistols are nice because she is still close enough to her allies to buff and heal.
If you position your tank and other melee fighters properly, she's staying where needed all the time (because they are the only ones in need of healing). Besides, AI targets light armor first, so why give him another reason to oneshot your main healer?
It may sound weird at first, but both views are true. I say, put her up close (but not in a position to be swarmed) if your main character is ranged, and put her at range if your main character is melee. She can balance out your early party fairly easily. Priests aren't designed to be tanky. They're middle of the road as far as HP and deflection go. You can build her out to take a few hits.
My main is up close, and with eder built like a tank, we've got the front covered. I keep Xoti back with a ranged weapon, but mostly she's throwing spells anyway.
