How long since you have dusted off your computer? How old are the fans themselves? Is it a laptop or desktop?
It is also possible that your drivers for the fans need an update(this is rare).
If the game crashes(and if it is not related to heat), it is possibly a sign of impending hardware failure. Unity games often applies a unique stress on hardware. Usually, it will not have an impact on your PC, but if the hardware is old or starting to be defective, issues can show up.
Do you get any form of error message about what caused the crash?
Sorry maybe i was not clear enough. It does not overheat at 65c, I was just giving an example of how quick the temp seems to rise when just being in the menu compered to just being in the game world walking around etc.
Ithink its more in the 73-74c when it crashed but not sure. my computer is a custom build desktop PC. I never had drivers for my fans. the only drivers related to fans are for the GPU and the CPU cooler and I'm already running the latest Nvidia drivers and CAM software for my cooler. I wouldn't think the hardware is old. system is around 4 years old (motherboard ram cpu) but GPU and cooler is more like 2 years old. I had a look in windows event and there are lots of warning and errors. From my understanding that is normal to see. Not sure what im looking for though. there is one that reads "critcal" and I am pretty sure that relates to when i force shut down the system. but there are a lot of warning and errors that show throughout the log. These Ones in particular i have listed below were before the crical entery.
Error: ESENT Event ID 455
Error: Msinstaller Event ID 11316
Warning: DistributedCOM Event ID 10016
I'm no expert on this but doing a quick search on the IDs did not give me anything related to a display crash though. so im not sure
In my experience, it is not normal for a system to constantly report a multitude of errors.
Even if it seems unrelated, those errors might still be the cause. I once had a game constantly getting visual glitches, artifacting and crashes. It turned out to be an issue with my Audio driver. Computers are weird.
Anyway, 73-74C should still be well within the allowed temperature. Maybe you need a reapplication of thermal paste for the CPU.
It might also be a PSU issue. Or a combination of all the above.
It really really depends on exactly what you have installed.
If you see errors, something is not working. How much it matters depends on what it is.
I popped mine open just now to have a look (I have not in some time). There was only 1 error but it was in there many different times.
I'm pretty sure it is likely the same ESENT error you see as it seems to have something to do with windows' app tiles and one of their folks doing a ♥♥♥♥ job with a windows update/event logging.
But since it seem related to app tiles and only seems to be messing up every five-ten minutes or so, I really don't care very much. It might be having worse impact if it's actually constantly failing but only logging it every now and again.
The thermal paste bit for your CPU might be a decent call. Heat usually won't result in errors so much as slowdown (thermal throttling) or shutdown (thermal protection) though.
I think people worry too much about heat. It's better for extending the life of the hardware if you can keep it cooler, but it's perfectly normal for things to heat up when they're being used.
The reason you probably see a jump looking at inventory is a bit counter-intuitive. It's easier to draw the inventory since it's all 2D sprites and a bunch of the 3D geometry is obscured. The frame-rate shoots up and it makes for more heat than 'working the card harder' by producing more complicated frames at a slower rate. It's kinda common for many games to have this issue when it comes to idling on 'simpler' UI screens.
If you've turned on VSync, then the game may ignore max frames setting entirely. If you have a 60Hz monitor and want to set max frames to 60 then it is kinda the same difference either way.
For this kind of game, I'm not thinking having frame rate capped higher than your monitor refresh is really much use. It is not 'twitchy' and so there just isn't benefit to faster input polling/reaction.
If your monitor is higher refresh rate, turn off VSync and drop the max frames down to 60, especially if you are playing turn-based, You should see less temp increase when idling on inventory view after you lower the cap on frame rate. You could probably drop frame rate cap below 60 FPS even and do more like 45 and not really notice much of a difference in gameplay but a decent difference in heat.
Its only been like maybe 1 year since i reapplied paste to my CPU. The temps seem high. but that's to be expected on an i 7 7700k
for this game im running it using special Ks mod. and I am forcing vsync through NCP along with threaded optimisation and triple buffering, since this seems to give me the best performance. But since my fps is capt to 60 i still don't understand why the temps would shoot up so quickly when in a menu.
I am also not using a monitor. I am using a 4k TV as a display so turning off vsync is not an option since screen tearing happens if i do.
for reff my system is
I7 7700k /NZXT Kraken x52
Asus maximus ix formula
2x8 Gskill TridentZ RGB 3200mhz xmp
EVGA 1080ti kingpin
Samsung 840evo 250gb running windows 10
860evo 500gb
860evo 1tb
western digital black 2TB
western digital black 4TB
EVGA G2L850
Have you turned on an FPS counter to see frame rate while this is going on?
I suspect if you did, you're going to see such counter jump upwards when viewing inventory.
I'm skeptical that it is hardly ever hitting 60 FPS @ 4K on a 1080Ti.
It could also be your HDMI cable is not rated for 4K @ 60Hz.
yes frame rate is 60 and dips to 55 in some places. If i dont use special K mod the game stutters and is just unplayble on my system. i run all my games at 4k 60hz so its not a problem with the cable.
I moved into an industrial freezer, was cheap to rent.
I'm dead now.
