Is it preferable to play PoE 1 first beforer PoE2?
Hello. I just bought PoE 2 yesterday. I was wondering though if it is recommended that I play PoE 1 first before tackling this game.

My Complete PoE 1 copy with all the dlcs is on Twitch so I can't transfer my character to steam on PoE2 later if I use that copy.

However I also have the base game of PoE1 on steam as well care of HB that I could play instead. Which version do you guys recommend playing before PoE2?

Yes, it's much preferable to play PoE1 first. The entire story of PoE2 is directly tied to the events of the first game, and without playing it you won't have complete understanding of the events of the series and will miss out on the emotional impact that all your decisions made on the world. PoE1 offers some large revelations into the nature of the crisis that your character has to deal with, and you'll be doing yourself a disservice by skipping the original game.

It doesn't matter which one you play - even if you can't transfer your saves into PoE2, the sequel allows you to indicate which story choices you made throughout the game so that the world reacts accordingly.

Thanks. I definitely will take your advice and play PoE 1 first. However, is it better playing the White March expansions for PoE1(from my Twitch copy) first before playing PoE 2 or is the base game enough so I can transfer my character from that steam copy?

There are some references to the White Marches in PoE2, as well, but they are minor. I would recommend playing the DLC if you like the base game, because it provides some very high quality content and unique upgrade opportunities for your gear. I enjoyed it a lot, but then again, I enjoyed the first game more than the second one in general. If your goal is to get through the story ASAP, it's safe to skip the DLC.

Thanks. I have decided to play the Definitive Edition on Twitch as you recommended.

BTW, I am a big fan of Obsidian studios and am glad they are now part of Microsoft studios. I am looking forward to what they can do with a bigger budget as using the kickstarter route sometimes limits your options when deciding how to create a game when you are financially handicapped.

It's not required but it's recommended. The story is a direct continuation of the first game's story and you won't understand half of the lore without playing POE1 first. Also, it's a really good game, so I would recommend playing it for that reason alone (including both White March DLCs, which were stellar IMO). For me, both games are a must play for any CRPG fan.

Just keep in mind that PoE 1 feels a lot different than PoE 2. It really goes for the pirate theme. I mean I knew that the deadfire was pirate infested as they said but if you come from PoE 1 you have that medival/fantasy feel and now its Captain Jack sparrow.

Its a bit of a cultural shift in tone, which personally I was not a big fan of.

Id also recommend planning your playthrough in PoE 2. PoE 1 was a lot "smaller" in scale and quests and PoE 2 has an overabundance of side quests. Almost everyone hands you a quest, especially in Nekataka and when you take em on they all make sense. I then had to leave for a week and could not play and when I came back I had a questlog full of stuff I had absolutely no idea what it was abound or who gave me what.

I'd say it's preferable - PoE2 references your character's decisions and dialog choices made in PoE1 quite regularly, even if those decisions/dialog choices might not have any massive impact on how things play out in the sequel. I'd honestly be surprised if the Twitch's version save folder structure is that different from the Steam version's. After all, saves are compatible and transferable between the GOG and Steam versions, so maybe try copying your save folder from the Twitch version?

Yes of xourse. Poe 1 is the prequel. Poe2 refers to everything on poe1.

Poe1 is dated. Play poe 1 first cause you might not appreciate or tolerate the mechanics after playing the updated and modern poe2.

I will look into transferring the save. Do you know which file holds the saves?

When you navigate into the save game folder, each of the files with .savegame extension corresponds to one save. Just move the files to your current save directory and it should work.

Thanks it will take some time before I reached that point since I am just starting PoE1, but I will try to do that before tackling PoE 2.

POE1 doesnt have turned based mode so that now makes it much inferior in my opinion. There are so many mechanics that you may miss playing it real time.

+1 to this and thanks FireDrakeZ. Sorry I didn't answer myself; was busy with work stuff.
