I've never really heard anyone describe that or MMO's in general as being 'real' RPG's personally, but I guess whatever floats your boat. Pillars is more a game for the traditional cRPG playing crowd who cut our teeth on things like Baldur's Gate or Planescape torment, I guess I can understand why a newer or younger audience couldn't see the appeal or why we'd be happy at whatever cost (being that this style and genre of game is completely overlooked by the AAA industry these days, RIP Bioware)
Not sure what region you're in but yeah steam has a knack and a pretty bad track record for gouging most non US folk, as another Aussie myself.
Third party sites like Greenmangaming are still running various 20% or more off vouchers here and there, and usually have their base price set at what the American's see anyway making it a no brainer win win. Always best to shop around.
Diablo 2 with PlugY the bottomless inventory stash remains my favorite of this specific genre. I may give Titan Quest a try again.
$80 for early access that isn't even in early access yet lol. So what do they give you as a compensation for being an idiot? Some exclusive armor? Special pets? Oh I know, exclusive increase of inventory space in a loot-based RPG.
Maybe by 2023 this game will truly be fully developed. But no, you should pay for it before you can even play it at all because that makes consumer sense.
I only got the cheap $24 tier though. I went all in for the first Pillars game on Kickstarter but never actually got around to playing those expansions anyway, so I figured I'd just go for the base tier this time around :P
What are you even talking about?
I don't recall the first one ever being given away for free, and since when was Pillars a hack and slash diablo style loot based game..? This isn't at all the same genre.
Also this game releases fully on April 3rd or 4th (Depending on your timezone I guess).
I must say I'm very confused and am at a complete loss as to what this rant is even on about??
There wasnt a free to install model.
Pillars of Eternity 2 :Deadfire does exist, it just isnt out yet (April 4th, 2018).
Pillars of Eternity 1 had a bottomless inventory stash also.
You are not paying $80 for early access, the game doesnt even have an early access as per say, it has a Beta, which only a few people who backed the game via Fig have access to.The Beta doesnt exist so people can actually play the game before everybody else though, because the Beta is very limited, its just so people can find bugs and test the mechanics out. (I backed on Fig, yet im not in the Beta)
You want compensation for helping out in the Beta? Who are these people who are getting some exclusive increase in inventory space/stash as compensation? Ive already mentioned previously that Pillars of Eternity already has a bottomless inventory stash/space.
Why would any game developer/publisher let you play a game and then you pay them after you played it? What if you didnt enjoy it? Do you get to then not pay them?
Hell, the largest package, which includes what seems like a kind of season pass for the possibly 3 dlc/content packs scheduled for release, plus all the other rubbish they bundle with deluxe editions, is only £52 or there abouts, thats not bad really. Personally I don't bother with deluxe editions as I don't care for the paltry cosmetic stuff and soundtracks and whatnot, but YMMV.
All in all, I think the price is reasonable and not over inflated. Americans always seem (although it might just seem this way) to get the same game at a fractionally lower price to everyone else anyways.
Either way both are ♥♥♥♥ compared to Diablo 2 with PlugY and all the other freeware mods :)
The reason I am here is because the publisher is investing the game budget on advertising on Steam popups upon booting Steam. Trying to sell early access to you before the early access is even available.
Get conned bros. Or exercise some consumer logic and wait until 2023 to even consider looking at the this game. Possibly, maybe, hopefully for you the game will honestly be developed by 2023 given the standard 5 year after launch rule.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the first Pillars is trying to hock off a soundtrack for a premium price here on Steam yes? What is this? A video game or a band?
I like Life is strange better than Call of Duty, another example of two games of differing genres that have nothing to do with each other. What's your point?
Again if you bothered to read the other replies, this isn't the case at all and you seem to be horribly misinformed about something. If you backed at the Beta or want to make the totally optional and not at all mandatory choice to upgrade your purchase and play now then you can play the early builds and contribute to the bug fixing or development.
April 3rd, 2018.
The game launches on April 3rd, 2018.
I'm not sure why you keep quoting some random date 5 years from now, and again I find myself terribly confused at your random outburst and general demeanor.
Because no other game on steam has added extras like the artbook or soundtracks as optional buys along with the game on their store pages..
Right.
This is literally the first game in existence to sell its soundtrack,.
This one right here.
in 2018

What even is this troll post anymore?
Why in the actual F would you pay them to be a game tester on April 3rd? Are you really that easy to manipulate?
I'm telling you to ignore this game until 2023. Maybe they will be wrapping up development by then. Otherwise you're paying for early access and again paying to be game tester.
I bet I could find the soundtrack for Pillars on YT and convert it to mp3 in less than one minute. So does the game not have any music in the standard version? What's the deal? Why the F are thrying to sell a soundtrack? Is this a video game or not? Last time I knew, music comes standard with games, and soundtracks can be found on the internet easily at no cost.

Beta testing has already been going on for months now from the people who backed at that amount.
What is so hard about this to understand?
The early access game releases on April 3rd. I hope it's like Diablo 3 where no one can play because online DRM (•_•) (•_•)>⌐■-■ (⌐■_■)
How much did the beta testers pay the devs to do their job for them?
BTW the loot system in Pillars 1 is boring compared to the real RPGs like Baldur's and Icewind Dale.
