Steam you can not. Must have steam unless it's an MMO or subscription-based game then those games will still work even with Steam uninstalled.

Huh? Ok... well, having a hard time believing that. You may not be lying out right but are you *sure* you can do that? Maybe you're mixing PoE up with something else.
Sorry everyone I forgot this topic for a while.
- I know that I can select the gog version, usually I do that. But when I have to update multiple times a game steam is more easy to use. I really don't like clients in general, but if I decide for gog I will not use gog galaxy (at that point the browser is much better).
- I don't know why you cannot start Pillars of Eternity 1 without Steam, I was able to do that with the mac and linux version some times ago, and I'm able to do the same with Windows version right now. It just start the game. Maybe you start it from a link that start steam I don't really know, I'm just sure I can and the game is also in a list online of drm-free games on steam
I also wrote a mail to Obsidian, but if they will not send an answer I will just pick the gog version.
