This! Mage multiclass is the strongest tank, you have all sorts of instant spells for tanking: +deflection + armor + spell reflection +Citzal martial might and the odd CC if you want.
Every even level I made choices a prissy elven mage would make. (Aloth)
Every odd level I made choices an aggressive dwarf warrior would make. (Iselmyr)
He used Sceptre and Mace as his weapons since they look vaguely similar and fit each side of that personality. The build ended up being more fun than I expected so Aloth got more time in party than intended to give him.
I used the Killing bolt spell with empower usually against hurt enemy spell casters to finish them off fast as enemy spell casters can be very dangerous if left unchecked.
Ended up just spamming Minoletta's Concussive Missiles every single fight after a while since it was so effective. Gave him Whale of a Wand so he could summon drakes and Blightheart when he ran out of useful spells.
IMO, it's probably the most versatile class in the game that I have found (so far). In any given battle Aloth can adapt to whatever works best. The spells make the Rogue fun to play and give him nice bonuses to hit, defense and movement.
For memorized spells I gave him all the fighting ones:
Fleet Feet
Mirror Image
Merciless Gaze
Llengrath's Displaced Image
Ironskin
Llengrath's Safeguard
Then for Grimoire I use a combination (he has three loaded at all times). If I need CC spells, I use those. If enemies are vulnerable to elemental damage, I use an elemental style Grimoire and launch Fireball/Wall of Fire/Lightning around (along with my Thaumaturge adventurer, who totally rules way better that Xoti).
I'd say 70% of the time I am casting 2 or 3 buffs (Fleet Feet, Mirror Image and Gaze) with Aloth and then ripping around the battlefield hitting with (dual wield) Strike the Bell/Blinding Strike/Finishing Blow. Escape and Shadowing Beyond are great for moving around the battlfield in addition to the Fleet Feet.
Aloth is a terror as a Spellblade. I'm sure he is fun as the other builds, but I dig the classes that require a bit of micromanagement.
