Some can be one of two single class options or the mutli-class combo of the two. Eder is one of those, he can be a Fighter, a Rogue or a Swashbuckler (fighter + rogue)
Some can be one single class or one of two multi-class combos derived from that class. Aloth is one of those. He can be a straight Wizard or he can be a Battlemage (Wizard + Fighter) or Spellblade (Wizard + Rogue)
This is the full list of options - I suppose this might be considered a spoiler but it's been up on the Obsidian no-spoiler board for a while and nobody seems to be batting an eyelid.:

I guess with the complexity of the multi-class system and the fact you have to make your deision on your main from the get go and you have only a five char party it makes sense you know all this in advance so you can plan your party synergy properly.
Note: the top seven are classed as companions ther rest are side kicks. You get backstories, quests, relationships and romances etc with the companions but not the sidekicks, that's apparently the difference.
@Bob3 I checked if there are console commands for POE1, and it did have one for changing classes. I didn't know it was possible to change the companion's classes. Most likely it will be in POE2 as well. Thanks for the tip.
