The crew helped me for the ?floating? hangman. I think I also saw 1 or 2 crewmembers participate on my very first boarding attempts.
This. I only wish we could get 4 star sailors for every position. Even if they don't seem to do much except for cannon, surgeon, and cook. My perfectionist streak makes me want it.
I'm still trying to figure out how a boatswain helps me. One encounter before I had one made it seem like they would help in a storm, but I haven't noticed much difference.
Vanizzi (One of the Port Maje crew), Baltia (Rescue from Vines on Motare o Kozi) and Coin-Counter Foeldas (I think Dunnage) can become master cannoneers.
Ora the Mad (Port Maje) can be a master deckhand.
Vektor (Tikawara) can be a master cook.
Edit: there's also Emeini (At the Brass Citadel), who has 5 points in skills when you hire her (3 cannoneer, 1 deckhand, 1 helsman), she makes for a great spare crew member.
Vektor does reduce the amount of food your crew needs (not sure on the percentage, but seems to be around 50%).
