Crew must for your ship.
Okay so you need to get that one troll cook. He is in one of the taverns and wow he OWNS ♥♥♥♥ when it comes to ship boarding fights. Good to have him early why I mention it.

You mean the one from the Hole? The tavern in the Gullet of Neketaka? Because they're an ogre. And a woman.

And I don't think the crew participates in fights.

Your deckhands participate before you have enough companions/sidekicks to fill in the gaps.

It does, but it doesn't seem to be consistent.
The crew helped me for the ?floating? hangman. I think I also saw 1 or 2 crewmembers participate on my very first boarding attempts.

People turn up to help you in ship to ship battles. The game seems to prioritise companions, then sidekicks, then actual crew, so you generally see crew fighting earlier on in the game because you haven't recruited everyone. That said, the Ogre woman is an utter tank and can pretty much liquify most early pirate crews solo.

She also eats 2 rations per day and can only get 3 levels in cooking. So once you get enough companions she's more of a burden.

This. I only wish we could get 4 star sailors for every position. Even if they don't seem to do much except for cannon, surgeon, and cook. My perfectionist streak makes me want it.

I'm still trying to figure out how a boatswain helps me. One encounter before I had one made it seem like they would help in a storm, but I haven't noticed much difference.

She stomps ♥♥♥♥ though I was like holy crap.

The Death-Godlike and the Vithrack also tear things to pieces. Which is good, because the Vithrack apparently can't do any surgery despite being a surgeon. Oh, Zoidberg you troll.

Where can you recruit a Vithrack?

One of the harbors. Dunnage, I think. The name is Big Mouth.

Ah, buyable crew members. Never used those after Port Maje.

Worthless Idiot (Imp outside Arkemyr's place) can become a master navigator (+40% speed on overland map).

Vanizzi (One of the Port Maje crew), Baltia (Rescue from Vines on Motare o Kozi) and Coin-Counter Foeldas (I think Dunnage) can become master cannoneers.

Ora the Mad (Port Maje) can be a master deckhand.

Vektor (Tikawara) can be a master cook.

Edit: there's also Emeini (At the Brass Citadel), who has 5 points in skills when you hire her (3 cannoneer, 1 deckhand, 1 helsman), she makes for a great spare crew member.

Only the overland speed matters among those, of course...

Vektor does reduce the amount of food your crew needs (not sure on the percentage, but seems to be around 50%).
