Or if there's major Youtube or RPGCodex-inspired outrage (and you're not Bioware) the reviews may be excessively harsh and may even lead to bankrupting a company when a game is at least fair or meh, even OK.
Such was the case with Sword Coasts Legends and n-Space.
There were some mistakes made (not least being PR) but it was met with,
in my opinion, a disproportionate response.
I've seen far worse games and developers leave with their tails intact following the review phase.
Then there are the rush jobs. Allegedly at least one game review called this game turn-based (not just the naval-part). I didn't bother looking it up as few reviewers seem to be complete.
I was actually surprised IGN only gave the game 8.5. It may reach 8.5 in reality, I hope it does, but that'a bit low (and closer to fair) for a media darling developer. On a good day, I'd say 7.0, a good day.
Most outlets these days are directly competing with youtubers and streamers, so they have to be super fast as soon as an embargo lifts. For RPG's, this is really bad, since reviewers never take their time anymore. They have to play on easy, can't do many sidequests, and have to rush through everything as fast as possible in order to get their review out on time. This makes for very shoddy and unrealiable reviews. I'm positive Deadfire would have scored a hell of a lot lower if people took their time with it and noticed how shallow it really is.
- Ellie, The Last of Us
- Max (optional) (Life is Strange)
- Zevran (Dragon Age Origins)
Three examples where there was no 'whining'. You know why? Because it was handled with respect in a realistic way. Deadfire's characters run up to you, hump your leg, and yell "OY GUV'NAH, GOT ME SNICKLE IN A SPLIT FOR YA!".
The one thing I have seen however, are rabid fans constantly attacking people who do have valid criticisms about this game. Not everyone is a homophobe, a racist, or a bigot, because they don't like infantile writing.
I can't speak for Ellie or Max but there was plenty of butthurt over Zevran going around

I like Pagan games better, like Warcraft 2, Icewind Dale, Armies of Exigo, Total War, and so on.
If you are to include christian videogames, however, make sure to reference anything Lord of the Rings, Warhammer, Stronghold, Path of Exile, Grim Dawn, Diablo, Command and Conquer (base Tiberium franchise)...
Plenty of awsome games and setting with heavy Christian elements out there.
So resume, are you a action player wo likes fast pase development, you better not try the game. But if you are interested in some background and are able the play this game as "reading a good book", you will have a blast.
And yes in the current state v102 there is room for improvment, think about small bugs and sometimes annoying loading screens.
I disagree.
POE2 has dumbed down combat system of previous game, that somehow ended up more uneven in terms of difficulty (mostly too easy) than POE1. +POE1
Main story in Deadfire is worse- it is three quests long nonsense, without any payoff (spoilers: there is no cool bossfight, you die instantly if you try to pick one with Eothas). Gods with cool designs building up your confrontation with Eothas and it ends in you going "Dude you are Wrong/Right/RightbutgivepeoplesomethingtomakethemstrongerObviousBestChoiceHere/KillEveryone" and he either goes 'Dude, you are right" or "Dude, you are wrong". Yeah, main story in POE1 is also garbage, but it has more content and variety (and bossfight). +POE1
In POE1 you have: Eder (Humor), Grieving Mother (Drama), Durance (Religious Lore), Kana (Geographical Lore), Aloth (Garbage), Pallegina (...). First three are well developed character (Eder's quest goes nowhere though), others suck but there is reason behind them existing.
In POE2 we have Serafen (Humor), Eder (Humor), Tekehu (Humor), Aloth (Garbage), Palegina (Why?), Xoti (Female Eder). Most of your companions have the same personality traits and despise violent behavior and unlike Tyranny or AP (where negative rep with teammates gave some bonuses) you get only negatives if companions hate you, leading up to them leaving your party. So be a good boy and don't play excessively violent, anti-religious a*shole or you will lose 4-th of the game's content. +POE1
Ui and Graphics are way better in POE2. +POE2
Writing is the same sh*t, but most of the annoying lore is hidden behind hyperlinks. Player replies sound worse in Deadire, but there are more of them and they actually lead to different outcomes. Sidequest are better, due to them being more complex and having wide variety of solution. +POE2
Factions. Yeah, those are obviously better in POE2, because the whole game revolves around them. Pirates, Valian Traders (which would be the best faction by default, because their leader is the only one who supports long-term development of science and education, so Devs decide that they are slave-traders to make them unattractive to player without putting any effort into doing so), Deadfire traders (Military fanatics), Huana (So these have no redeeming qualities and they have cast system, where one a*shole decides whether the newborns life will be sh*t for the rest of his life or not, with promise of rebirth in higher cast). Pirates have the best quests (both subfactions), Valians and Huanas are fine in this regard, but i do not remember a single Deadfire Trader's quest and i have done them all. Also faction quests cross with each other in interesting conflicting ways. +POE2
I am not counting voice acting as Pro for POE2 because it sucks.
I like POE1 better to be honest- it was first Obsidian CRPG project with quite low budged and did well for what it was. POE2 had way more resources, but, arguably, ended up only slightly better than POE1.
PoE2 looks like a messy box-ticking contest for political themes.
