How does experience gain work?
Seriously, just yesterday my main character was in the lead, and each follower had less and less experience after that. Now, my main character is two points ahead of the first follower, while the third and fourth (who were below before) are about 100 and 200 points ahead, respectively.

How does this work? The game says the *party* gains X amount of experience points, so there's nothing that suggests that different characters are earning different amounts of experience. It's supposed to be evenly distributed, right?

If you are dead/unconscious when the xp is gained you don't get it.

Most battles give no exp though as just killing stuff doesn't give it, but if you get the Bestiary xp from killing enough of something you get it in/after the battle while people are still "down".

I've never had any character dead or unconscious during a battle. Any time that has happened, it's been due to me going into something I shouldn't have, so I reload.

I am very sad that they still kept this #$%#$% model. Why not just give XP in every fight, feels bad man.

That just makes combat the preferred solution to any problem.

Combat is always the first, primary, 2nd, secondary, and 3rd choice for a situation. None of the fing wimpy-ass dialogue skills.
