What choices effect the result of "The Lantern of Gaun"?
Spoilers for Xoti's quest-line.

On my first couple playthroughs I always had her release the souls into the Luminous Adra pillar atop the animancers tower in Sacred Stair. Every time the same result happened, she would release them to the pillar, the souls would be freed, and her suffering of its effects lifted.

This time I did it, I did everything the same and told her once again to release the souls when she gets injured, but instead she says she cant and it doesnt work. The quest log says she "decided to absorb the souls for herself" and after she does she says some creepy thing about being powerful and *insert edgy statement about death here*

Needless to say Im not happy with the creepy resolution of her consuming souls for her own gain, but I cant get it to resolve the way it always has, I dont get what changed considering I did same stuff as my previous playthroughs. Does anyone know what variables effect the outcome?

I picked absorb the souls before killing her in the jungle. Absorbing them gives you a crystal gem thing you can use to enchant the lantern.

It's a nice buff to use on the created NPC priest I made after killing that annoying ♥♥♥♥.

:D

You get the crystal gem from any of the options, absorb or relase. (Btw your a terrible person for killing her, I adore her character, that accent!) Guessing you probably dont know since you killed her, but how does it affect the story/ending? Anyone know?

She says sad stuff now that I dont ever remember her saying in my last playthroughs, she said she doesnt "see the light" in anyone anymore, and that everything is full of darkness. Its downright depressing, makes me sad but I dont know what the heck changed this turn around the game, I did all the same dialogue options and choices, that Im aware of.

Isn't the gem you get different though? i.e. it can only be used on one or the other upgrade.

It's the same gem you get.

If you tell her to release, then you get damage aura unlocked. If you tell her to keep the souls, you get the spell resist aura (possible bug right now, see below). It's the same item, but only one enchantment option will be open. The choice is probably also tied to her ending. She will crave reaping and eventually go crazy if you pick "release souls" .

Both auras get 1% increase per religion skill. Damage aura starts at 1% while resist aura starts at 10%.

Some people have reported that the spell resist aura is resisting your own spells (i.e. buffs, heals), so you may or may not want to pick it right now.

I had her release the souls into the adra, and got the resistance aura enchantment. She also very much didn't go crazy or crave reaping afterwards, if anything she was finally at peace.

Yeah I think he had it mixed up. My first playthrough she released the souls and the ending was the best possible one, no ugliness or evil. Im pretty sure her consuming the souls would make her go crazy for reaping, makes sense right?

But could someone give a definitive answer to this? Im worried now, Im way past that point but shes said some seriously creepy stuff to me, which has been entirely different than my last times. She didnt do the whole "Watcher! guess what!?" conversation about the dreams being gone, the dreams dont go away.

What I dont get is what changes this, considering I chose all the same options, told her to release the souls, yet she consumed them regardless.

In a similar thread here someone said that Xoti makes a decision based on 3(?) conversation choices which are recorded in the journal. That's all I know.

I dunno what happened with it after that. I made it absorb the souls got the gem, upgraded the lantern then immediately took off all it's gear and brought it to the sacrificial pit and killed it.

Funny thing is it was actually involved in dialog with Eothas when he teleports you to the Palace. Something to the effect of "are you still the same person that sacrificed a companion" (something like that), said yes, Eothas said "good then this will be easy for you".

There's at least two threads with a lot of details. You may want to check those Justin, some people have made quite good posts about it.

This is correct. You can check your journal for which option you picked. It will say you guided her towards the dark/light side and whichever side you pick more is what you end up with

Not exactly. My understanding up to now.

2 light - 1 dark:
Tell her to release: bad ending.
Tell her to keep: good ending.

3 light:
Tell her to release: good ending.

3 dark:
Tell her to keep: good ending (read this, the rest I actually tried)

You need to check the journal after each discussion.

I did three dark, both options ended up her keeping the souls and gave me the damage aura.

What's the "bad ending"?

Hmm... keeping the sould is the "bad ending" Im fairly certain another person posted 3 dark got her releasing the souls when they told her to keep them. *Quite confused*

And somehow -given the character- it is very fitting... lol
