It means you're not really interested and talking is usually too much effort

Not onyl talking, stoic means you don't bother. Like "Give me your money or I kill this child!" and you would be like:

1. I kill you first! [passionate]
2. Don't! The child is mine! I'm hungry! [cruel]
3. Meh...[stoic]

I'd personally go with [shrug] :D

Stoic is an adverb meaning a person is actively repressing emotion and feelings to focus on logic and rational thought. They are not indifferent or cold, they are removing emotion from the issue and focusing on the situation from a calm mind and disposition.

This guy gets it. It originated in ancient Greece as a phlisophical stream that would free people of desires and emotions. It was supposed to make you have a better life.

As far as this game goes, think of Stoic as the 'strong, silent type' of character. You don't talk much, and when you do, you keep it short and to the point.

Within the game it's imo actually a combination of both your statements. In terms of the philosophical ethos it is (on a very basic level) about accepting your place in the universe and being resilient to any misfortune. And because everything in the world is neither good nor bad but just another part in the entity of the universe you simply don't give a sh... about changing it (in the game).

Within the game it's pretty much a simplified version of the philosophical idea.

Agreed. That's pretty much what "stoic" is in PoE.

An oversimplified version of stoicism would be "if it is up to you, do it. If it isn't up to you, just accept it: it has no reason to make you feel pain. If you failed at something, it's because it wasn't up to you".

It's a particular strain of philosophy that is becoming more and more popular again with all the self-help fad. Mainstream is reviving it, which is good.

This is bascially correct.

In one sense it means the opposite of Passionate.

In another sense it means sticking closely to your code of ethics no matter the difficulty or unpleasantness in doing so as well as being strictly rational in your actions.

It is often popularly thought of as simply not complaining in the face of pain or problems but just quietly getting on with what needs to be done.

This is not really correct. Being stoic also requires you to be calm and rational when nice things happen.

So in another sense yet it means not being swayed in your views, decisions or actions by emotional reponses to events, good. bad or indifferent.

It's complicated becasue stoicism was invented by the ancient Greek philosophers and they were....complicated.

To give two examples of a stoic vs. a rational character used in films:
Spock is an (obviously) rational character. But because he's suppressing emotions he's not a stoic. On the other hand Andy Dufresne in "The Shawshank Redemption" is a stoic character - accepting his imprisonment and being calm, yet working on what he can change by himself.
