If i dig a hole the size of a building in front your house I can garranty you, you don't want yo be inside when that happens, just the matter pushing up, like the statue rising out of its hole will generate enough vibration to wreck everything around, only the foundations will be standing.
There's also the fact that while the hand was infront of the keep, the way the statue was posed meant that that hand was further forward than the rest of the body. So while the hand and some of that arm were in-front of the keep, the rest of the body was - if not directly under - then close enough that he probably bashed the back of his head on the foundations as he came up.
