Honestly, I think thats how to do it. Create a ton of sidequests and make the game receptive to the player so you can replay it more. They will add DLC. Many games are just too long imo.

i found the "sidequests" far more interesting than the main one, imo the entire purpose of the game is to discover the islands and different interests of each faction, that's the content, the god walking is just a line you follow but thats not the actual story

there are ups and downs to both approaches. ofcourse we all want always more, but a dragged out mainplot would've been annoyin aswell.
i loved PoE (still probably my favorite IE-like of all time) for it's main-plot and characters (lots of psychological and religous undertones), but PoE2 isn't the same game.
PoE2's focus is more on the world and exploriation. if you play both games side by side you will see how incredible different both games "feel".

i do hope they've plans for dlc-content which atleast matches White March 1+2 in scope or even something bigger and not just PoE3 and some minor dlcs.

Everybody praises Skyrim and its main campaign was just as short

Read the season pass description :)

It's okay to have a short main game, but the biggest mistake they made was not restricting it at all. You can basically complete it in 4 hours. I wish they would have locked parts of it off until you are a higher level or done a lot of other things, like Chapter 2 in Baldur's Gate 2 or for a broader example: most GTA games (except the last 2).

I liked Tyranny quite a bit more than PoE1, because while it was much shorter, your choices mattered far more so it had more replayability (faction choice in PoE 1 pretty much amounted to a single sidequest). Haven't played Deadfire much yet, but if it's designed in a similar way I'll be happy :)

Do they still lock down continued play after beating the main story ? Because if they do, and the main story is sort... then that's kinda dumb.

Damn that's really crappy. Defeats the difficulty of the end boss if you're so overleveled and overpowered cause you've had to do all the side content prior...

I was completely let down by the main story. It's not only short, but completely disappointing. If there wasn't so much sidecontent to enjoy, the game would be one big pile of garbage code.

No comparison to other cRPG.

Besides that, the mechanics are very poor. You can basically cheese your way through the game with mass-CC, itemflipping on vendors, using stealth and rogue-abilities to run through every encounter etc.

Seems like much of the game is poorly designed, which is a bummer, cause the game in itsself is actually preatty fun and could be really good, if they did some things different.

If you only count the missions you absolutely HAVE to do, then yes, the storyline is very short.

If you count all of the quests that have an influence on the progression or outcome of those quests however, you'll find that almost every quest for any of the major factions will in some way impact it.

Even the quests that don't directly impact the faction will instead impact your reputation as the watcher and your standing with the faction, opening and closing doors as you progress and giving yout companions time to open up to you, which will then determine if they will stay loyal or not.

You can blitz it in 4 hours, get a very mediocre result and walk away cursing the game or you can take your time, work on your support and your enemies and make the world a better place... Even if that just means better for your business interest.

I've watched a streamer play the game and he chose to ignore many of the quests and to side with nobody. As a result his end game result was a big mess because he did none of the groundwork, sided with nobody and helped only himself.

Full disclosure: I actually think this was exactly the right way to go about it. The game lets you do as little or as much footwork as you want. You can go out and be a pirate, hunt bounties, find treasures and when you had your fill and just want to see the credits roll, a couple of hours of quests and exposition will give you that.

It's like a buffet table of fun:

Want a quick game? Roll a character, rush through, be done in an evening.
Want to be a pirate? Roll a character, take bounties, do the pirate quests and any quests in other locations that lead to them gaining power, then hunt down ships from any faction not pirate friendly before proceeding on.
Trader? Aid the trading company as above.
Explorer? Go sail for unexplored islands and delve into the depths of dungeons while ignoring those petty squabbles.

You can even make characters with such goals in mind. Make a scarred salty dog for your pirate run, make a huana character to aid the queen, make a charismatic trader to help the trading companies, etc. tt. The backgrounds actually change your options and how people react to you, which means when you play a huana originating from the islands you'll actually be recognized and treated as such, giving you different options and dialogues than your pirate would have gotten.

It's a good approach.

It's a horrible aproach for a "spiritual successor" of a game that mostly focussed on an epic main quest.

I didn't care at all about all the random ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and the boring factions but I had to play it or else I would be done in 10 hours with a game I spent 50 bucks on.

EvilDonut May 18, 2018 @ 7:26am
This is, in facts, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Obsidian managed to do worse than EA, and that is no small feat.

Well done fellas.
NixBoxDone May 18, 2018 @ 7:33am
Yeah, well, that's just like, your opinion, myaaan.

Jokes aside, this really applies. I can't tell you to enjoy the game if you don't. I can't tell you to be satisfied with the short "main campaign" if that's the only thing you spent those 50 bucks on.

If you think aiding one of those factions so they'll do what you want them to during the main quest is a waste of time and that those quests don't count, then fair play. We'll just have to agree to disagree because I really dug that approach.

All I can tell you is I liked it and why I liked it. Tastes may vary.
