How to Enter Character Names in the Console

I could very easily be missing something obvioius, but I cannot get the console commands to work when any character names are involved. For example, I tried to raise a skill and kept getting "ambigous object" errors and it kept saying there were several matches for the name I entered. I tried entering my character's name, "player", "player_(name)", and I tried the same things with my companions and got the same errors. Certainly the game is still playable without cheats, but I'm vexed as to why this isn't working. If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to learn how to fix this.

I fixed this by auto-filling in my character's name with tab. If anyone wants to know, just begin typing "player" in the space meant for the character name, then press tab, it will automatically fill in the right name.
