Any open world game like Cloud Pirates?

So the mechanics of this game look great, but battles are meaningless for me without exploration and trading. I just don't like the round based structure of this.

Do any of you know of an open world game like this where you can do all of it? Buying/upgrading ships, managing crew, exploring a wonderful environment, trading, fighting off pirates? Sid Meier's Pirates was a lot of fun, but outdated now in the battle and exploration aspects. Any recommendations?

Not that i can think of. I dont know of any Vehicle based MMO. Which i find strange now that i think of it.

Not really the same genre but since you mentioned the Sid Meier game which is pretty far from this, I'll mention Eve Online and to a lesser extent Star Trek Online.

If all you really want is an actual massively multiplayer environment with boats, I haven't tried this one but from what I understand Black Desert Online has lots of that.

Also blackdesert has changed. When i last played it (really it was only like 2 months ago) it was Free....now i have to pay for it.

It never was a F2P game. Maybe you played during free week / weekend, cause there was few events like that.

Anyway I believe OP is interested in something else, where you can actually manage your ship and crew, take part in sea battles and so on. In BDO you can only craft a boat, then use it as mode of transportation or fishing boat. That's all. This is really a great game focused on many role play activities like farming, trading, cooking, employing workers, housing, etc but it has nothing to do with Cloud Pirates gameplay.

Yeah just to clarify, the idea of sky battles seems very cool. Boats on water are slower in turning and the vertical axis of the sky makes it overall more interesting. But I really need the open world aspect with it to be able to enjoy it. Space games are the closest it gets I guess, but just such a different setting.

Would be cool if the Devs release "Cloud Pirates" the MMORPG!
Just keep the ships, add open world and the ability to get off the ship and do stuff.
No rat or spider killing for 10 levels!

For all that mentioned BDO (Black Desert Online) be advised its a full world pvp game. In BDO its more of an mmorpg character based and focused, not ship focused. Shipe/horses are for transportation and resourcing. Recently they added a few more ship for combat withing guilds or against sea monsters, but not very in depth in either. You also have to purchase the game initially, but then you can run it for free with limitaions.

there is a game called pirate galaxy.. but again its featured in space so it might have the exact same feel "That I know you are looking for.".

but its a game where you can go to worlds and is fairly open, but its very pay to win.
