Illyriad - Grand Strategy MMO

Illyriad - Grand Strategy MMO

Is it addictive? (in the bad sense)
In the past, after having played several games like Ogame, Shogun's Fate, Supremacy 1914 and an exclusive alpha version of a game a friend of mine is developing, I realized this kind of games produce a serious addiction on me.

Once you realize of certain symptoms like you are planning your life in order to keep all the game's timers in check, be present to abort an attack of your army/fleet if the enemy somehow gathered an army/fleet bigger than yours in the last minute, etc. You realize you have a problem with this kind of games. Even the most isolationist, like the one my friend is developing, where you basically can ignore most of the other players (especially because we were few at the moment) (well, I also stopped playing for other reasons)

Please, tell me if you can play this game basically playing on your own, and not having to face situations in which you lose everything if you aren't present at the moment your enemy attacks you. For instance, Shogun's Fate wasn't so punishing if another player invades you. Basically they couldn't cause serious damage beyond making you to pay taxes and killing your ministers (this was the most serious thing, but basically you could breed samurais like if they were livestock)

Back to Illyriad, I don't know how is the overall experience of playing this game, but if I could, perhaps I would forget about all this kingdom managing stuff and simply creat a hero and travel along the world to discover new places, achieve heroical deeds and stuff like that. It would be awesome to play an MMO were you could play in an alternative way as the usual "raise a kingdom, forge an alliance, and crush your enemies". For instance, in Shogun's Fate you could focus on mastering ninjitsu and simply becoming a master saboteur and annoying the hell of other players. Or be a mercenary who poisons enemy armies and kill their generals (war ministers)

You can
It's frowned upon in the community but it can happen

Why would it be? You are not annoying anyone

People don't need a reason to do covert ops or attack anyone

You can certainly play Illyriad without involving yourself in the community or in any alliance. I've never heard about it being frowned upon by the community at large, but you are probably missing out on one of the key selling points of Illyriad.

It's very rare for those sorts of players to be randomly attacked, and certainly not without exceptionally good cause. It would be unthinkable for such a player to lose all of his cities - although mechanically it is possible it's difficult to imagine a scenario where such activity would not arouse the entire server in their defence.

The real concern you might have with this route is that, unless you joined an alliance at least for the initial stages of the game you might be unfamiliar with some of the commonly accepted practices in the game. Not settling within 10 squares of another city for instance is one you'd almost certainly face, but depending on where you are on the map it wouldn't be an issue. Land claims in the Broken Lands could also be problematic.

So definitely possible, but ill-advised I think to do so. At least initially.

It's extremely addictive though, especially if you get into the nitty-gritty of it - and the daily grind of the game can be a bit much. Doubly so if you have a second account.

Thanks for your through advice. I think this game is not for me after all. In a different time of my life perhaps I would have tried the game, but nowadays it'd be counterproductive.

Bye
