The current version of the game is looking good. The whole core gameplay loop is done.
I have decided to give up on the trying to juggle between a full-time job and trying to build this game. So now I will be building the game full time. =)
I will be releasing a version into a new branch really soon. Maybe next week?
I'm pretty excited. I played it for a while the other day. Just playing, not playing for 5 minutes to test something, but a couple hours just playing the game like I was a regular person. And I had a lot of fun, which is a good sign, because I'm hard to please lol.
The big change of making time cost money, has changed it so much for the better. It's not just taking contracts to earn money to buy better gear. Now you're earning money to pay rent and put food in the fridge. And of course save up for that sweet piece of hardware.
You can choose not work, and instead spent the whole day working on a new program, repairing your scorched cyberdeck, or resting to heal your injuries, but those recurring costs aren't going to stop just because you stop working.
And it's not just enough to buy any old food. I filled up on instant raman. It's cheap, filling, and tastes pretty good, but has next to no nutritional value. Which caused my character's health to slowly settle to a much lower level. Which made me more likely to be injured, which caused my character to get some Scorched Synapses when a Killer IC booted me out of a node I had no right being in. Which meant I was laid up in bed for a while, which meant I wasn't working, which meant I could only afford to keep eating raman. Such is life for a fledgling hacker I suppose.
Haha, I'm ranting but I'm excited.
In the early game, there won't be much opportunity to drop a small fortune on a server farm, but as gameplay shifts from struggling to survive to flourishing and growth, there would definitely be an opportunity to do something like that.
Maybe a server farm like the chips? A big frame and being able to fill bit after bit.
Hey Gibblesmirk. Rent will be auto-deducted every 7 days. Until such time as you can get out from under it.
You certainly can eat food by wandering around and grabbing it, but it's also in the rest menu. No cumbersome management involved. Crawl into bed, pick what you want (or can afford to eat), then choose how long to rest for.
The economy has been balanced to take the new expenses and prices it into account, but it could require some fine-tuning as the feedback rolls in. It's a big overhaul across the board.
For example: It doesn't cost anything to write and compile a program; just time. In the previous iteration, you had to spend money to make programs. However, time is no longer free. Your rent for that day is effectively ¥85, so if you spend one day just programming and not earning money... well your gonna have to make up that money on a different day.
I have expanded the safehouse, added a chunk of the city level, an npc, and a software store to the city level. I radically expanded the programming functionality, and wrote a fairly in-depth programming tutorial. Hopefully it's enough to clarify how to make your own stuff.
I have to finish the hacking overview tutorial, basically explaining how to navigate, where to go, etc.
I was going to add in more subroutines, but I could release it with the dozen or so I have and add more in future updates. We'll see how I'm looking for time. I might be able to squeeze a few more in.
Tomorrow I should be able to get a basic tutorial finished, a basic intro, and get the "Beta Branch" set-up. I need to clean up a few things, but I can have a build out either tomorrow night or Wednesday.
