The Horus Heresy: Betrayal At Calth

dead game waste of cash
do not even remotely spend cash as it seems the developer hasen't bothered to continue the said project if they indeed have done so a refund is in order as not only is the game flunky but in dire need of modification if at all playable also they need to add more of the legions sick of playing just as ultra marine's.

I find it truly impressive that this game was abandoned SO HARD by the developer, they don't even list it on their website as one of their games. I won't touch anything from Steel Wool Studios again.

Old version of post left intact, see EDIT down below.

So... I still managed to find my way to buy a copy of the thing, supposedly complete, but now I see on here that there was at some point cinematics for introducing missions?

Is it just because I'm playing VR that these aren't there, or was the game gutted as it updated? I'm a bit disappointed to find a game interactively even more bare-bone than the trial version of it. Though at least it now has its 15 maps* and hopefully an ending. At least they didn't bioshocked us into buying a game totally different than the one advertised.
(I've just realized there is also a fourth act still locked... maybe there is even more stuff than the net is letting out about? Or is that just the same old trick than for Battle Sisters? Having a whole chapter for a boss or cinematic?)

Currently the only storytelling is offered as text during loading screens, and with nothing to indicate when the scene is over, since the continue button will only load the map prior to the scene ending. (You just have to wait with nothing happening, until you are fairly satisfied, considering some pause and silences will delay some lines unnaturally. No longer are voice acting used...)

Other than this, I'd say Op might have been overly critical of it. For 20$ CAN and knowing what this is, I'd say it can compare with other fast buck licensing on tablets, except it does VR. Yes, looking at you iPhone Riddick game. :steamfacepalm:
(Though for that price and these graphics, I'd have loved to be able to load this directly into my Occulus Quest II, and not be forced to play it by link through the Rift / Steam interface.)

Now If they'd decided to renew their contract and add more factions (Warp Abominations / Mechanicus), this could have become a low-key gem, but with only the Ultrasmurfs and Word Bearer to offer, and no grenades or weapon specific actions per squads... (I mean, they didn't even bother to gift us with an apothecary** for most of the game. Nor assault marines**, those would have at least had the potential for faster movements.
Furthermore, I'm disappointed to have reached further than the middle of the game encountering no destructible terrain***; which are teased in the tactical map's legend.)
Yeah, pretty much feels like a promotional app, just in time for a movie that never came out.

Though that's when judging it from a VR perspective. Standing from a PC standpoint, I'd guess some might be pretty much appalled by the content. Especially since there isn't a couch Vs / Co-op support for a player being on the PC while the other wears the helmet. (Or we haven't found out how to make it work yet.)
I'm also surprised that the code is so heavy... that the computer can't be used at the same time this game is running. (It will crash the game.) I mean, we had no problem running Lone Echo I, while the PC was running YouTube, some 12 pages of research and photoshop. So why would this turn based static app ask that much more RAM?

Now if only they could add VR support to BattleSector... The principle here was good, it's the execution that was all over the place. If you're forcing the player to link, better have some PC level action going on.
All considered, you might want to save half the price and get Regicide instead. Unless you really want to live the scale comparison in Vr. (That's what I bought it for.)

EDIT : 15 Oct 2021 :
* It now has proven to have more than 15 maps, since ACT III is longer than expected. I'm also no longer sure that the locked part is just a boos fight, but I'll soon see!
** Assault Marine makes an appearance as an Hero piece, but during act III. More or less offers more movement, but certainly better options, since it can jump AND regenerate. At the end of act III, we finally get ONE (1) Apothecary unit! It heals at the end of an action the units around him. Can't say if they become available for multiplayer yet.
*** Destructible terrain is still just a tease by the sixth mission of act III, but now the maps often hides your legend or objectives since they are bigger than their zone in the interface.

A bit sad there isn't more missions on the surface, since I had hope to visit Calth in all its glory, taking the scale of the Imperium in for a tabletop Dark Heresy game. On the other hand, considering the novel this is from, there is a good reason why we aren't up there passed a certain point.
