Be a pro
So, I just feel like playing a Rugby game. I know just about nothing about the sport in general, don't have a favorite team or anything, but after a quick read through on Wikipedia - I just... want to play a rugby game.

I want to play through a career as a single player (ala FIFA, club and country, so on) and it looks like both RLL3 and RLL4 have that option. I saw a patch for this game came out last month - so in general, for a complete new guy to the sport, the game, and everything else, what is recommended? RLL4, RLL3, something else?

Go 3 if you wanna play BaP. 4 is alright but 3 had it perfected. 4 is quality but 3 is gameplay imo.

Also in the same boat. After watching a recent game live on TV, it got me really interested in playing a rugby game.

If you don't account for BaP, would 3 still be the best option for a newcomer?

Absolutely. 3 is a lot more player friendly, the game feels easier to play even on the hardest difficulty, and if you're new to the rules it's also probably a good way to learn them. 4 is a lot more technical, and at times a lot more buggy, so id easily say go with RLL3, especially due to its price drop.
Here's some gameplay of 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4oa7MJHJt4
and heres some of 4: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjMpMRSCXpU
