Where the other Danganronpa games are games I want to replay again very soon and will buy every time they get rereleased.
It doesn't really add much to the series in terms of story. More than anything it's for people that want to see more of Toko.
Because a lot of "fans" wanted the spin-off to be the same style as the first two games, they try to make it look worse than it should be. To be honest, this is the first time in a while since I heard that UDG is bad, the last time was around it's release. It's a good thing NDRV3 will get released soon.
This game is not bad. It's mediocre at least and a suprisingly fun and interesting game with a good character development, worldbuilding, and ok story at most. There a lot of repetitive elements, and the gameplay is alright (I guess...?) for a third person shooter, though the aiming needs fixing which should be done properly for this port...
If you are a fan of Danganronpa, then this shouldn't be an issue. If you're a fan of Danagnronpa just because of it's gameplay and the only reason why you played the games in the first place, then you will probably dislike it.
Second, my thoughts on the game (keep in mind these are largely subjective):
To be brutally honest, I thought it was terrible. And, no, that's not because I expected it to be just like the other two games. I was fully aware that it would be nothing like the DR1 and 2 in terms of gameplay. I went in with an open mind anyway, expecting to enjoy it as long as it was a good game.
It wasn't a good game. Not by my definition of the phrase, anyway.
Reasons why I thought UDG was awful:
The first two would have been enough for me to say this was a bad game. The remainder are just nails in the coffin.
That said, the game wasn't totally without merit...
Redeeming qualities of UDG:
I'd give the game two stars out of five. If the PC version were to fix the controls, I'd probably bump it up to 3 stars. The game would probably be somewhat bearable at that point.
That said, keep in mind that, regardless of everything I've said, there were plenty of people who enjoyed the game. You might find it as amazing as they did, or you might despise it as much as I do. I'm just telling you what I thought of it.
Gameplay-wise, this game really is nothing special. I disagree with a post above saying the controls were clunky, personally I never had any trouble with it. The control scheme was nice and for a third person shooter it had good controls. Where the worse part comes really is the repetitivness and overall diffculty of the game. In general it follows simple formula, walk around, shot some Monokumas, get across an easy to solve puzzle (nore to it later), find a collectible, get more insight into characters and story, boss battle, rinse and repeat. Of course, new Monokumas appear and you get more bullets, but that is, sadly, about it.
The game is also very easy. I was personally suprised by how little challenge the game gave me. I played it on normal difficulty since I thought I would have way too hard time on hard (and I suck at FPS and TPS on consoles). The biggest challenge comes from getting Eye-shots consistently, finding all Despair Warrios (a collectible that is often very hard to spot) and one puzzle near the end of the game. Otherwise....nothing much. Puzzles are easy to solve, Monokumas are easy to deal with even without getting Eye shots and there is almost never any part where you feel like you are lost, since the path you are supposed to follow is very clear (except one time, this one time you are really on your own to find the right way).
I think my biggest gripe with the gameplay is the fact that every single fun thing does not last long. Like one time, you are trapped on the highest floor of one building full of Monokumas in complete dark. You don't see anything unless you flash your light on it. So, you would think now you will have to fight your way through this situation, right? Well, this part is actually very short. Few Monokuma jumpscares (they are not big, but still pretty spoopy), some talk later and suddenly game decides to just skip from the highest floor down to bottom.
Okay, so one part of the game is barely average. The story is where UDG really shines in my opinion. Simply put, its so different from the other DR games, yet it feels very DR-like and is still briliant. The twists, how dark it is, characters, everything works perfectly.
Toko and Komaru are two of the best things. Both of them recieve huge ammount of development and I personally think these two are two of the better written characters in the franchise. Especially Toko. She needed this character development and she quickly became one of my personal favourites from the entire franchise thanks to this game.
Then we have, which is in my opinion the single best character in the game. Monaca. Without spoiling much, she is just briliant. Incredible antagonist. She is, for me at least, one of the biggest reasons to experience this story.
As for the story, it's dark. Very dark. I was really suprised by how messed this game is. You literally walk through a town where children kill adults and then play with their bodies. And this is only one of the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up parts, there are many.
So yes, gameplay meh, story is great. You really play this game for the story than anything else. And even if it is a spin-off, it is still an important part of the DR story as it explains few questions DR1 left unanswered. If you liked the first two games, you should give it a try.
