1. Play style. Take me, for instance, I LOVE TO SNIPE. However, most of those sniper weapons have a considerable drift to them. Meanwhile, with a nice scope and the aluminum grip, you'd be surprised how accurate something like the M4 semi can be. In my case, giving me some sort of a rapid-fire SMG or a shotgun would not work, unless I am using it for a specific task. However, if i couldn't hit the broadside of a barn and i loved to get up close and personal, I might consider something with a little more devastation, perhaps a good SMG. I'll get around to specifics in a moment.
2. Surprisingly deceptive weapons. I'm one who also loves to use my weapon, without aggroing the entire town - or alerting other player to my location (making it easy for them to kill me). As a result, I use silencers. Some weapons, there isn't a lot of silencing going on. Some weapons won't take a silencer. However, when you use a silencer on your rifle, it takes away 10% of the damage. Let's look at the M4-1A vs. the Honey Badger (HB). Many people like the M41A. At it's base, it's damage is 25.5. With a silencer, it's down to 22.9. Meanwhile, the HB - whose base dmg is 23 - is one of the most common weapons in the game. Unfortunately, it will not accept a silencer. But that is no problem; as the HB is quieter, without a silencer, than the M4-1A is with one!
3. Personal preference. Some people will tell you this is best or that is best. In the Stanag line of ammo, MANY people swear by the L85. But it is noisy as hell, even with the silencer. Personally, I prefer the M4 semi or the night stalker. Sure, the L85 does more damage per shot.. by a whole 0.5 dmg points. But that M4 semi, with a silencer, sounds like a mouse fart. In other words: I will get off a headshot and you won't even hear where it came from!
4. Availability of ammo. You could have - by far - the BEST, MOST POWERFUL weapon in the game. But you can't find ammo! In simple terms: it does no good, if you don't have any bullets! You want something where ammo is overly abundant and VERY EASY to come by. Consider this, when choosing your ideal weapon. Back to my M4 semi again ... there must be 10 different weapons that use the same type of ammo! My buddy loves the AK-47 - especially with that 27 dmg rating. But I will collect 15 30 round clips (along with a couple 45 and 60 rounders), before he finds 2. To put it another way, I'll have 600 rounds collected, by the time he collects 60!
5. The best weapon for ... who? IT'S YOUR GAME! Pay attention to the stats, which are applied to the various weapons. Check the stats on the items you place on those weapons; such as: scopes, grips, silencers, etc. They will affect the overall performance of the weapon. For instance, my M4 again... it has a recoil rating below 5 and an accuracy/spread rating of 2.8. A forward grip gives me a -6 reduction of recoil and a -1 reduction of accuracy. But an aluminum grip gives a -5 and -2 respectively. As you can see, the standard forward grip I really do not need, as the aluminum grip is more than sufficient to eliminate and recoil. Plus, with that -2 to accuracy, with the grip alone, it cuts my accuracy rating down to 0.8. Add a proper scope (compact scope is the best, IMO) and the laser ... I have ZERO spread! Basically, one shot, one kill!
6. Best advice: Consider what i have written and go out and find which weapons YOU like best. Which weapons fit your play style? Which weapons, "feel right," to YOU? Go out, collect a ton of different weapons. Find a very low pop server and go into an obscure town, as other players may leave you alone to experiment. Try out the various weapons. Take the time to apply the various add-ons for each of those weapons. The last person to whom I mentioned all this... She fell in love with, IMO, the most underrated, under appreciated weapon in the game: the Honey Badger.
Non sniper
Desert Eagle
Ak 47
L85
Scar red stalker
Sig 556
Always use attachments - alumininum front modular grip
Acog (compact if you only do 3rd person) rifle laser and silencer when applicable
Don't use standard stanag drums for pvp (they have a debuff). Use elites (no debuff), 60s or, 45s. Of course this applies to intentional pvp'ing use the 30s and standard drums for farming...
Those guns are fairly all purpose. There are some situational standouts such as the aa-12 and Saiga. Also most machine guns if you know when and where to use them. (Close range)
Keep in mind you may want to use a cheap one as you'll lose them often if solo or without a group of 4+. My favorites are the Mauser sp66, amr2, and the OTS. The silenced snipers are super OP if used right but are costly and hard to self farm...
