Why can't I put my items away

ok so on the old verson of this game you go in for a bit and get some items, guns ammo the basic needs for surviving but when you filled your backpack you would leave and drag all your items to a little inventory place on the home screen. except in this verson it just keeps saying no vault around? do I have to buy a vault?

In Survival mode you have to go to a safezone to access your vault. Other modes you can still stash the old way
