I saw that too! :)
I was browsing Netflix, saw the word "Detention", stopped dead in my tracks and thought, "Oooh, is this based on the game?", watched the preview, saw the blurb on the bottom that confirmed that it was indeed, based on the one by Red Candle games, and was like, "HELL YEAH!"
It's pretty good so far. I was hoping for more horror imagery like they had in one episode, but eh, whatever. Based on the direction they took the series, I can understand trying to focus more on the "social horrror" aspect instead.
I got excited every time I saw an easter egg. The title sequence is spelled out in red candle wax. Ray's "head tilt" is in there. I also spotted the piggy bank from Ray's room.
Eager to finish the series to see how they end it. I have to wait until the 26th to watch the last two episodes. XD

Well, the answer got two sides: yes and no!

Yes, it's "based" (see the quotes) in the game, where you will see the characters, places, easter eggs.

No, is not precisely the same plot, it does not take place at the same time, does not follow even close to the script of the game. The focus is different, so as the horror elements. I didn't finish yet, it's true, but I am close and didn't see the spirits we have to avoid in the game, so linked with the Chinese mythology, so cool! No, they are not in this "adaptation" (quotes).

I have to admit is a nice production and those ones never played the game will like the series, and I believe some that actually played all the game will like it too. Not everybody cares with this thing of faithful to the source (no, theres is no river so far nor storm).

But I have to share my disappointing. This is probably the first streaming series produced based on a game, and it does not follow the original source material. What creates the horror in this beautiful 2D game is precisely the time and place it takes place, with all it implies, and how the events will happen, how the story, history and mythology is presented and used as horror elements, etc.. In the Netflix, the characters are just pathetic old fashioned people trying to live in a world that do not exists no more (at list in that place). Where is Detention after all???

Once again, we horror game fans didn't see a masterpiece translated (no quotes) to other media, we still miss some Hitchcock to say that a real good adaptation (no quotes) is possible.

@Gustovopi
I have to disagree on it not being the same plot. It features the same plot as the original game almost to the letter; with Ray's family situation, the relationship that develops between her and her teacher, the book club, and the betrayal leads to tragedy. The main difference being that in the tv series, we now have a "duplicate" plot happening over top of the flashbacks we're getting from the original plot.
I thought it followed the source material very closely. The mythical creatures aren't featured in between flashbacks, no, but I wouldn't say that just because the show is missing a few monsters, that it isn't the same plot. In the game, the monsters don't seem to be an overly important piece to the plot either, other than giving the players something threatening to have to deal with while they figure out puzzles and learn about the story.

@serialzero I stated is not PRECISELY the same plot. I understand you have a different view because you do attribute different values for the aspects of the game and movie, and I respect this. I don't pretend to have the final word, just express my thoughts.

However, the guy asked and I have to give him the reality, is not EXACTLY the same thing. And, in my opinion, is very different in some aspects.

I have discussed this subject for a long time. In the past, I didn't mind about some "details", as we see in famous adaptation Silent Hill, when monsters came without any narrative purpose according with the original source. But today my understanding is that details might change it all, probably a recurred mistake. I played several times this game, I am convinced the impact is very different because the changes, starting by the fact the Netflix series takes place in a time/place that is "safe". In fact, the series shows almost nothing about the dictatorial period, a great historical contribution of the game.

Having just watched the show, I'm now really curious about the game it's based on.

At first I thought it was just a coincidence that the show had the same title as this game that slumbered in my game collection... (I think I got it as part of a bundle).

I thought the Netflix show was actually quite clever and not at all what I had expected.
