It's a very enjoyable game, has a pretty deep story involving trauma and reconsiliation, offers multiple endings, has creative puzzles that make you think...

Compare that to most things listed as 'horror' lately...
So yes, I, personally, feel that it is deserving of the overwhelming praise it is receiving.

I think playing this game just like reading a novel or watching a movie. The game it self is not horrable, but the story and the atmosphere during 1945~1980 in Taiwan is the biggest part in this game.

The music and the graphic is good, by the way~.:vanilla2:

There are some games are related to that period (1945~1980) in Taiwan.

Like:
The Rainy Port Keelung
http://store.steampowered.com/app/349320/
or
Blue Blood Lagoon

Both are Japanese style visual novel, and the story is related to massacre.

I definitely enjoyed it. I think reviewing things is kind of hard, it's like, the main thing is objectively I think the game is really solid, like there's nothing wrong with it, but it's hard to like judge it on like a scale of like ingenuity or whatever. Like out of all possible horror game iterations could it have been better? Maybe, but it definitely solidly does what it's trying to do. Like, it's a "perfect" game, but there are other horror games that are completely different that are perfect in their own way. Like it's hard to get into exactly what makes the game good without sort of overanalyzing the entire game.

I think if i can some it up in one word, "Refreshing" would be what i'd go with. It's something new, interesting, fun and has some genuinly scary moments. It deserves it's praise :)

Oddly enough on gamerankings.com, it has no reviews. ( so far ) I imagine that will change...

Also, I'm a horror junkie. Love Shudder ( streaming service like Netflix ) and read magazines like Rue Morgue. :D

This game is mostly just for its well done story. The demo really stops at a bad point to where it feels you might be using the breath mechanic and might deal with more supernatural elements, but it pretty much just brings in one guy and then just drops it entirely.

Pure puzzle focus and walking from that point.

Not really. Also, as long as I enjoy the game, I uprate it, why should I care the result?

Can't understand what you're trying to say. Just that you don't give this game a complimentary comment, doesn't mean that it's overrated. Of course, if you're not a Taiwanese and you can't understand some traditional culture of us, this game wouldn't be so appealing to you.

This is actually a rather entertaining romp of atmospheric and psychological horror (from the protagonist's PoV), and despite its length, can justify a $10 pricetag. It did better than most of the generic platforming/point-and-click games, and while some may argue it doesn't deserve a 95%+ user rating, a 90%+ this can qualify for.

Despite the hype, it certainly deserves 85%+ or 90%+

i started playing it only a few minutes ago and i already got my dose of asian horror clichés ...

i don't know, i'll keep playing. I hope it's not overrated and has some surprise in stock.

But cmon, that "spookyface" poppin up when you hang up the phone ? jeeeeez ... :thepro:

The topic can hit an emotional chord with players from certain regions especially, but outside of that, just looking at it for what it is without emotion clouding things- I just finished a full playthru, and I was happy when it was over. It had it's good and bad points. At places it just drug on and I found it dull, at other times, I had a hard time figuring out how to advance the story, which at times is all over the place. It'll depend on the individual as to if you like it or not, and -if you do, how much.

Want to give it a try, but hesitant? That's wise- things that are hyped should make you react with caution. Wait for a big sale, then try it, keep your cell phone's alarm timing your playtime so you don't go over refund time (under 2hrs, within 2wks from purchase).

(Just realized the last 2 posts are the only ones from this yr lol, but the information is relavent for any potential buyer, and also as feedback for the dev team).

Detention is not the best game I've played but . . . it was in my top five last year. It's not quite as robust of an experience as, say, SOMA, but it's one of the best recent narrative games. The gameplay is fairly minimal and the puzzles aren't crazy hard but it's comparable to, say, Oxenfree, IMO. A differnce genre, of course, but a scary and very personal drama all the same.

I glaced at the Steam discussion to see if there was a Detention update and/or news and landed here after noticing that I don't see any reviews for whatever reasons. Detention is a more challenging game than some but it deserves an audience. If you like games that have content, games that aren't all shooters, and your definition of horror includes dark political events . . . you'll find Dentention worth your time.
