I'm talking about the jump height.
Every other game: Wait till apex, hit button again, more height.
THIS game: Slam down on jump button immediately for the most height. Waiting till apex just doesn't work.
It feels like, after some experimentation, the game's going off some physics where it multiplies your vertical speed and the more drag on the first jump, the less multiplication you get.
Which is...really strange, and I'm not sure why it's done like that. Ideally the assumption is giving the player more control over their jump height but other games do that by how long you hold the jump button so, why fix what isn't broken?
I am actually too frustrated with this one segment to go back to it right now, I'll go back to it later.
Also doesn't help the controls are not that snappy and I have seriously had trouble climbing hills because the minimalist graphics make it difficult to tell which terrain I can and cannot jump from. And I can't jump from the absolute ledge to get this light shard because the game straight-up won't let me. I can't even keep trying until I get it because of how frustratingly LONG the climb back up there is and I've actually slipped and fallen just trying to get back up.
This is going to be one of those things where I have to get used to weird controls I guess.
Well, katamari had weird controls and that game was good, so, ugh, it's just a barrier to entry sometimes that can be powered through with enough violent brute forcing.
edit: OH...great...because I got frustrated and quit to cool off, now I have to do th first part again. That's...discouraging, considering I hated the voice acting the first time.
I actually like walking simulators and atmospheric games, I...thought I would be the target audience. I guess not, I feel kinda bad about that.
And I know why it did it. I see what you did there and it's a good idea, you've got a system in the game that prevents people from jumping at all if the terrain is too steep. This prevents people from being able to Bethesda their way up mountains and anyone who actually cares about their level design should be doing this more often. (You would be amazed how many people do not, I don't even know how hard it really is to do in Unity either...)
I want to put that out there because I am absolutely not mad at the game for doing that.
I AM frustrated with not being able to see where the absolute ledge is due to the cell shading obfuscating the ledge, and I have tried this eight times.
I'm not even bad at 3D platformers, I grew up on them. I beat banjo-kazooie 100% on the original N64 hardware because I apparently hate myself. (I will never do that again.) I HAVE actually tried grabbing this thing eight times though, am I even supposed to get it like this? I feel like it's just out of reach.
Anyway, I...REALLY want to like this game, maybe that's a failing but I REALLY want to like this game, it ticks too many of my boxes. I'll try it again later after I've had caffeine and painkillers...
There are two stars on what appears to be a...well, let's say it's quite the climb. One is one you can get running into it but it does point to one over the ledge that I assume you need to jump for. I don't know why, but I can't get it. It seems like it should be easy to reach but I've consistently failed and I've tried tapping the jump button as fast as possible. It appears to need some height to obtain.
I don't know if anyone else is having trouble with it since the only person who replied didn't even comment on the jump height being reversed in this game than it normally would be in others.
In all fairness to you, something working differently than players are conditioned to expect isn't necessarily a bad thing but I'm not sure what the point of using a less conventional, more physics-based jump was over the traditional one.
You have to quickly tap jump instead of reach your apex first, just mash the button in quick succession. This took me forever to figure out as well.
I know your pain, bro, - that light + me = 8 tries
I finished the game and didn't see a point to it either. I was never in a spot where it was beneficial to only jump once. It would have been a lot less frustrating to have a single jump that is the same height as the double jump without the double tapping.
Agreed, I am unsure why the game needs a double-jump besides creating artificial challenge of making the player perform two steps in quick succession instead of 1 that is convenient. A double jump is useful in games with heavy platforming and a lot of timing, it doesn't make sense in a game like this and it rarely ever works very well in 3D space to begin with.
Are there any further tips to help me get along?
Thanks in advance!
Did you collect and combine three butterflies together to jump higher?
