I mean, if you want to, you can try the prequel first! It'd give you a very unique perspective on those two games that few others would have! But I'm just saying, that's not the original order of release, so to me it feels like it's better to play the original first!
But yeah, that's just a suggestion! Ultimately it's up to you! :)
That would be chronological correct.
I regret a bit having started with the main game
I started playing them both later (and still do). But during playing the main game, i regret it sometimes.
I think as far as you haven't been spoilert yet, playing the prequel first, may be an option.
So if you haven't yet, start with before the storm.
It might be even enough playing the current two episodes first and then switch to the main game.
You might have a complete different view on the main game then. At it would be more intense, i think
So currently it's about 6-9 hours of playtime
You might play both LiS and Lis-before the storm individualy . Each has his own storyline.
Of course, they belong together in a way, since BtS closes some gaps of the main game.
But there is a gap of three years between the two games, and its not necessary to play both LiS, and BtS to experience one story.
But I'm pretty sure you will end up playing both, once you are addicted
The main difference is the perspective you get, since you are playing different characters in different timelines.
If you're starting with "Life is strange", you might ask yourself: who is this Rachel? And what happened to chloe? And why was she so into this Rachel?
But you will already know about rachels fate, when starting "Before the storm then"
If you're about to start with "Before the storm",
Well you are about to expirience Chloe's story: you will know who is rachel and how she was like.
But - unless you are already spoilert- you won't know anything about her later fate.
And some scenes of the main game may become even more intense to you, since you get a better sense to Chloe, after having played BtS.
On the other side you won't know anything about this Max, chloe is alwas talking about. ...
Max is the character you'll play in LiS.
I think both games are fine to start with, but if wasn't already spoilert and had the choice again to choose from which to start with.
I'd prefer starting it the chronological way.
And since you said you are short on time,
Before the Storm might be your choice then
