funniest thing is seeing original Dontnods hand painted assets with those new more Telltalish stylized ones... I am affraid of aesthetics considering original game was stellar with this...
Also writting seems to be sub-par at best, Chloe/Rachel interaction was weird at best and there were a really cringey moments so writing doesnt seems to be improved from the original game
A: No, Deck Nine Games has been chosen by the publisher (Square Enix) to create this prequel game.
Q: Is this Life Is Strange 2?
A: No, this is a separate prequel. Dontnod Entertainment is developing “Life Is Strange 2” separately.
The above is copy pasted from the pinned FAQ here. It looks like Dontnod is busy working on the actual Life is Strange sequel while this Deck Nine was given the prequel to work on. Likely to get two Life is Strange games out as quickly as possible, but who knows for sure.
1. Why that expand from the moment, DONTNOD said that they will not expand season 1?
2. Sure thing, DONTNOD is busy. BUT why didn't let DONTNOD create it AFTER finish any of these 2 games. WHY you gave that to another studio?
3. Did DONTNOD work, help with this team in the scenario and stuff?
Sure that Deck Nine have access in the content but this didn't change the fact that the scenario will be THEM. So fanmade. Will have canon elements from season 1 BUT don't change the fact that this scenario will be from Deck Nine and not from DONTNOD. EXCEPT if DONTNOD had gave something.
Why from the nowhere comes someone take your work and made an spin-off?
I think Square Enix is the problem. They saw that LIS1 sales well and use that to make quantity. That I THINK. And give me legit info about Life Is Strange that belongs to Square Enix. Because if that's true. Then Square Enix do LIS whatever she want.
Don't get it wrong. I don't have any problem with Deck Nine. Doubt it that these questions will filled with answers.
Having said that Dontnod has hired the American writer back to the Life is Strange Season 2 team so obviously they understand that their game was successful because it had decent writing and and good story, which is why they brought back Christian Divine for Seson 2.
So having said all of that, hopefully Deck Nine has some good story writers and the story in Before the Storm doesn't suck because that would be bad for the franchise and for many of us Life is Strange needs to have a really good story and that won't change for this prequel, if it's story sucks the game will suck big time.
Also, game made by different dev isnt nessessarily a bad thing- we've seen that in case of fallout franchise for instance. I mean best fallout (new vegas) was made by Obsidian not Bethesda. As long as they can keep what was good about it and add even better stuff, they are golden.
Not to mention LiS season 1- while amazing- had some large drawbacks, most notably the ending. I've seen communities split on endings, but this takes the cake. Im in lair that thinks ending (i.e from start of nightmare sequence) is a total mess. I mean it ignored a bunch of stuff that happened in game that were constant in no matter the timeline. Basically main problem with it was that writers REALLY wanted grey ending, so i guess they just rushed it and didnt make even decent grey ending. I mean its suprising, really- writing quality up until that was so damn high, then this tranwreck.
So yeah, writing the ending to this is something that i really expect them to do better this time.
@J
1. Plans can change. Maybe they tought of good way to make prequel, maybe its just SE-s moneygrab attempt. We will not know until game really hits release, so its pointless to guess. continuing this on 2.
2. Well, dataminers have already suggested that there was originally supposed to be 3rd ending (my guess- its gonna be used in Max's extra episode), plus LiS own files suggested way back that there were supposed to be 8 episodes. So no, i dont think this is out of the blue, rather something fans have been suspecting even before there was episode 5 released
3. Im pretty sure they mentioned they are consulting
There wasn't meant to be a third ending. There were some placeholder data left for the original idea for the sacrifice Chloe ending. DontNod themselves clarified this as the original idea reffered to as the Hospital ending was one where Chloe would have ended up in a coma.
Kind of people discovered listings for such information by datamining but they would also be external to DontNod and making their own conclusions, which inevitably is going to lead to the idea of there was meant to be eight episodes but this was cut down to five.
I will try to answer your questions with my best guess and what information I do have.
1. "Square Enix stated that the decision to make the prequel was a “reaction to so many of you asking for the chance to revisit Arcadia Bay”, and the fact that a bonus episode would give players “one final chance to play as Max”, suggests to us that as rumors have suspected, the sequel will have an entirely new setting and cast of characters."

2. I expect Square Enix offered this project to Dontnod first. Sort of the way LucasArts offered "Knights of the Old Republic II" to BioWare first. Dontnod, like BioWare, could have declined due to working on other games or because of the deadline that Square Enix had for the project. In BioWare's case, it was the latter and the project was offered to Obsidian Entertainment.
Dontnod stated they started work on "Life Is Strange 2" shortly after the physical release of "Life Is Strange" or Season 1 in January 2016.

My guess is Deck Nine did not start the writing aspect of "Life Is Strange: Before The Storm" until June/July 2016 as they did not hire the lead writer of the project until June 2016. (Lead Writer Zak Garriss was not hired until June 2016, as was a chunk of the team.)
3. Dontnod did play "Life Is Strange: Before the Storm: Episode 1" and give feedback.
"Though Dontnod offered feedback at this later stage of the development, Garriss confirmed to us that “in terms of design of Before the Storm, from early conception to what’s polished in episode one now and future episodes has been entirely Deck Nine working alongside the team at Square Enix”.

4. See 2.
5. Square Enix does own the "Life Is Strange" franchise. If them letting another studio make the game is not enough proof for you, you can look at the store page or any official site for "Life Is Strange" and see the legal information:
"Life is Strange: Before The Storm © 2017 Square Enix Ltd. All Rights Reserved. LIFE IS STRANGE and LIFE IS STRANGE: BEFORE THE STORM are registered trademarks or trademarks of Square Enix Ltd."
Therefore, Square Enix can do whatever they want with the franchise. They can make as many games as they wish and have whomever they want make them. The only way around that is if Dontnod had a clause in their contract that gave them first choice on any "Life Is Strange" related project. That would simply allow them to accept or decline a project, not stop projects altogether.
