imo, the melee is impractical, just use a close quarter gun like shotgun
melee can only attack at 1 side (where the wpn being held), and it risk crushing, attack can miss as the prediction just don't have the "precision" for it
and it has this stupid "min attack range"
gun - doesn't limit to 1 side, it don't need dash/jump to close in, risk crushing, can just shot over obstacle that not blocking the shot but will hinder dash if melee
the game is build around using gun
No, its very useful. Axes can deal 40-70 (or more) concussion damage to a pilot. With it you can knock out literally all enemies in each battle.
You can swap the attacking side with CTRL. And with my axe i tend to one shot (concuss) pilots attacking them from behind (hence the need for a FAST mech) while keeping the mechs highly salvagable. a fast melee mech is VERY useful at taking out key targets like enemy MLS/beam/sniper/UHMG units
The key to landing melee attacks is using the "flashing circle" beneath the enemies as a hit indicator. hasn't failed me so far. With a proper use of the indicator you can even land some mid enemy dash swings very reliably
Here's an early gameplay example for targeting as well as an early example of properly used melee:

Axe Shield with Mainly Medium armor is the ticket.
Its not impractical, your just not utilising it correctly. I have been able to knock out 2-4 mechs in a single turn with Melee. And when you pull it off, its so Sweet....
