The hit box for melee is...weird. Like, really damn weird. Like, you have to pay really close attention to every bloody attack and see what the results are, until you realize exactly what you need to do weird.
Could have been implemented just a wee bit better...
Honestly, it seems so simple, that... yeah. It probably needed a bit more play testing.
Like, big red arc. Line up an, or even better, multiple enemies in it. Click the execute button. Smack. Seems utterly self-explanatory.
But yeah. Think I'll restart that tutorial battle, and retry. I'm clearly missing SOMETHING about the tool-tips or hit radius.
Then you get to faff about trying to figure out the magic sauce of THAT weapon 'arc', instead of a throw away mech you will never see again.
This specific case, get to the side or back of stationary target and just bloody hug the sucker. Like, suck right on up like a kardashian to a famous person. That usually works, and...like I said, doesn't matter since you won't see this mech ever again, heh. What really makes that mech shine is it has a MISSILE LAUNCHER secondary. So, walk, don't run, obliquely to the enemy advance firing that thing off at whomever. I tend to angle to the right, cause...well, lazor beam going off to the left, then after advancing enough do a dash to the side/back of whoever is in that little alley or right outside of it, then melee into them, then dash away. Preferably to on top of a building so I can pew pew missiles at the start of the next round before choosing the next melee target and heading that way.
Melee is very, very selective. Once you figure it out.
I tried to search for guides, however, the devs only explained that it's similar to Jousting. I understand that the mech cannot maneuver in the x-axis when dashing in the melee animation, hence the jousting. However, in this case, even slashing the back of a stationary opponent has a big chance to not hit. I referred to the tutorial in-game and tutorial videos, making sure to place the enemy mech within/beside the Red Arc, it still ends up missing most of the time or my mech gets totaled due to ramming.
The Devs should revamp the melee system, preferably to a hard-targeting system (ala XCOM 2) because as it stands right now, I lose sorties and good mechs due to the hit-or-miss 50/50 melee system. I also run 200% damage setting for my campaign and since we don't have an option to save the game each turn, melee is a waste of time at this point. Many restarts later, I opted to bring a shotgun and a railgun instead.
