So about the homeguard
Everytime i decide to contest a zone and hep the homeguard, they only have 1 tank to support, any reason?

Besides the tutorial where they actually bring in mechs of their own

They will always just have one tank

You can also call in support before the battle starts and you'll get 3 extra home guard units (1 is usually a mech from what I saw) but that costs Reputation to use.

It's in the lower line on the uppermost branch of the upgrade tree, "Radio Uplink". You can then choose to spend a point of homeguard reptutation at the start of your battle, to get reinforcements that will drop in on turn 2. Tooltip says you get more units with higher rep, but haven't tested that yet. Provided you win the battle and don't lose any HG units, you'll get the point of reputation back.

Using it with 3 rep (I think, it says 3 on the screen, but sometimes it says 4 elsewhere, <shrug>), it was adding +75 pts to my capability assessment at the start of a battle, and usually dropped in a decent mech and 2-3 more tanks.

Pro tip: quickly sweep the timeline in turn 2 to check where they're landing, and *make sure you don't have any mechs standing there or passing through the space*. And that's the story of how my slow shotgun heavy was late to the battle after getting crashed by a flying tank smacking it on the shoulder >.<

I had a rep of 5 yesterday and called in the HG and they dropped a Heavy and 2 tanks.

...but I am the support. I'm on my way to support the one tank their dumb asses sent into battle alone.

I can see why they lost the country the first time around.

Calling in reinforcements gives you more Homeguard units than are present when you help the Homeguard in a fight.
AFAIK calling for Homeguard help always gives 3 units. I don't use it all that often, but I've only seen it drop in 3, never 4.
Showing up to help the Homeguard, though, means you are helping one (1) lone tank. It's always a tank.

What makes even less sense is when you call for Homeguard help while in a Homeguard fight - they're more than happy to send even more dudes to help you help them, but they couldn't deploy those extra dudes to begin with?

There's some flavour text that pops up at some point that explains that when we're rushing to support the homeguard in a battle, it's not approaching the main battle, but rather a deep strike behind the lines to knock out the command element, or something to that effect. Don't remember whether it was one of the first homeguard battles that triggered the text, or just one of the pre-mission blahblah screens, heh.
