I really don't get the melee weapon.
Where am I even supposed to place the arc to hit with this thing? It seems like this mech is either swinging way too early, or just not registering hits at all. And that's when I don't just crash into the target and fall over instead of seeming to damage them.

The red wave that appears when you click attack is what will actually hit, so you have to make sure you’re connecting while also making sure you’re not actually running into anything.

I’m just going to… pretend I haven’t been ramming into things for great effect

For some context, I think of Melee a bit like jousting. The goal is to fly past the enemy you're attacking in such a way that the blade (red path) passes through the enemy unit. Ideally without crashing into the mech you're targeting.

For some additional info, you can choose which way the mech will slice by holding ctrl while planning an attack

As well, if you do hit a unit during melee be sure that you're at least one weight class higher or that the enemy is destabilised. Otherwise the attacking melee unit will be knocked down.

During the tutorial I swung at a stationary tank 3 times before I rammed it and killed it.

It was sitting in the red path and the base even blinked red to alert me that it was "going" to hit.

Just a bit iffy.

I've had times where the replay showed the mech swinging the sword at the *start* of the dash, instead of the end

Only tired melee in the first scenario you get a mech with that option, but it didn't seem to work. It has a collision warning when you place the attack, but even if I avoided that it created a collision anyway? Also, you get knocked down if you are lighter and are the attacker? Really? Doesn't that make melee useless for smaller mechs? Wasn't an issue in that scenario though.
I just shot missiles instead :)
