DLC confusion, need help
I want to buy this game and I'm not a huge train buff so I have no idea what trains go with which routes, can anyone tell me if there's some kind of guide somewhere that can tell me what trains go with which routes?

I'm so confused. In the loco DLC descriptions it doesn't say what routes it can be used with and the routes don't say what trains will work with them. I picked some trains I want to drive I just need to know what routes to buy for them.

I would appreciate any help

Thanks

All DLC locomotives and rolling stock aren't locked to a route in Trainz, unlike for TSC and TSW games.

You can however, filter by country using the Trainz Store, as this would give you an idea https://store.trainzportal.com/collections/dlc

Note: Prices are in US dollars 'USD' on the Trainz Store.

You can also obtain free routes, locomotives, rolling stock and other assets via the Download Station 'DLS' in Trainz so, you can find any type of route. Just don't expect to find all railway lines LOL but I can confirm Trainz has more DLCs than any other game both free and payware

Awesome thank you for the information, you've been extremely helpful. TSW is the only train sim I ever played besides the old Microsoft Train Simulators way back in the day lol. This is the only other train simulator I've found that seems worth trying.

No worries, Happy to help

I started out playing with MSTS, then used BVE/OpenBVE every now and then. Got Trainz Collection 2004, 2006 and Ultimate! For ages I got stuck with using MSTS, then used Open Rails which sadly seems to have been left to rot.

I then got TSW on Xbox, loved it so much and purchased at that time it was called Train Simulator 2019 by Dovetail Games, it's now called Train Simulator Classic 2024. I also got TSW 4, but really disappointed there's no official route editor built into the game.

I then got TANE 'Trains A New Era', Trainz Railroad Simulator 2019 'TRS19' and then finally Trainz Railroad Simulator 2022 'TRS22' followed by the platinum edition.

Wow you really tried them all. I figured due to the cheap prices rn thanks to the summer sale I would give this one a shot since it has really good reviews. The other sims I looked at seemed to be a mixed bag.

Don't worry about Simrail for the time being! I am waiting until I start seeing routes available from other countries. Being an Australian, I am hoping to see something Australian but if Dovetail Games couldn't add anything Australian in either Train Simulator Classic or Train Sim World, I doubt that the developers of Simrail would include anything Australian. I am also hoping that Simrail gets a route editor, games without a route editor seems a bit pointless especially when you would like to create your own routes for the game or at least attempt to LOL but don't let that turn you off from the games you want to enjoy!

Just remember you will need to purchase ‘Train tickets’ to download content. Monthly or yearly. There’s lots of complications and fiddly stuff.
I had Auran Trainz a lifetime ago. Loved it! But it was time consuming as it’s a model train builder rather than a train driving simulator.
I put a ton of work into it (Win XP days if I remember) I came from MST and have TSC and TSW2/3 and 4. I’m a lot older now, so I like the ‘not knowing’ by jumping into scenarios or timetables. Plus I really love the getting to work the cabs.

Those days I had a chunky manual in a box - unlike today online everything……

The thing that eventually made me hmmm, was your building your own routes and therefore you know every nook and cranny and it’s not a surprise anymore after you’ve done tons of work.
That and the confusion when it comes to content and payware and of course monthly/yearly subscriptions to access it through Trainz only.
The servers were despicably slow, on budget downloads unless it was Gold, if I remember?
so remember those thing and look into it.

They could have made this so better streamlined, after decades, but it’s still clunky.

I too was thinking about going for the platinum, but those memories seem to be curtailing the urge to do so.

What exactly does ‘train ticket’ monthly etc downloads give you?

TRS19 was primarily offered as subscription model, although a one-time purchase (but with the monthly DRM check still required) is also available via the Trainz Store and Steam. It also has the ability to download content from the Download Station (DLS) while in the game; though without the purchase of so-called "first class tickets" (limited-duration speed upgrades) the download speed is severely throttled.

Wait, it has a subscription model? I don't understand, isn't all the dlc's available on Steam as separate purchases? What does the subscription offer that the dlc's don't?
Bobby Aug 6, 2024 @ 12:25pm
Man it’s complicated.
It’s the download limit (for extra dependencies etc, etc) that’s a hindrance unless you pay for the ticket, plus it’s slow and limited to 100mb. I’m not saying it’s bad, but you do need to do research. I’m sure the server when I did it was in Australia , hence it was coming in at kilobytes! Like 5 lol

Have a look at here. Whether it’s 2019 or 2022 it’s still the same business model

Listen to the game videos.

INCLUDES 6 QUALITY ROUTES
Each route utilises all the latest TRS19 content and features and is fully editable by you! The initial download includes the updated Kickstarter County 2, 10 Tutorials and a Content Sample map. The additional 5 built-in routes included in your purchase are downloaded at your maximum Internet connection speed using the in-game Asset Download menu. Choose to download all, or as many as you like.

With almost 500,000 items to choose from, additional free content can be downloaded from the Trainz Download Station. (Note: For DLS content, a First Class Ticket purchase will increase your DLS download speeds and remove the 100MB daily limit).

That kind of turns me off. I have to pay all this money for DLC content then pay for a "ticket" to download the rest of what I need? That's too much imo.

I think I'll pass for now. Maybe I'll come back to it another time when I get bored enough with TSW.

If you want more stock assets etc, then that’s afaik from the Trainz Portal.
Steam has a workshop for this? Check that out.
Just as I thought about download speed without ticket

I’m going to look into it more.
If I don’t need the portal then I may get it + you have the 2hr limit on Steam to try

Ok I'll check it out, thanks. 56K lol that is beyond ridiculous in 2024.

It is friggin archaic. This download was the same in 2001. (23 years ago…)
Btw, I see no steam workshop. So everything will be coming from their servers.
Here’s another *warning* post.

https://steamcommunity.com/app/1784570/discussions/0/4517758247946511170/

I would hope you buy from steam and get the benefit of steam, but it’s just a ‘window’ to you having to log in to their account to play or use it anyway.
Hence the ‘agreement on the store page’.

Unless you purchase one of the subscription options or a First Class Ticket, download speeds are capped at 5KB/s. The free server on the Download Station is capped to ~5KB/s.

Bearing in mind I owned this 2001 and back then people were more tolerant.
Today, electricity is expensive and being stuck on an overnight to download what would take 1 to 2 seconds on my fibre cable is just going against the grain.

Like I said. If you just want to buy a budget Trainz with DLC and some simple messing about, that is probably fine.
Generations today think it’s fine to be flinging money at subscriptions and loot boxes and ‘extras’. This is why it’s a mess that’s existed for 20+ years. Because they deem it acceptable in Trainz
Imagine if steam decided that you buy a game you get it at your internet speed then any DLC (60GB) thereafter you purchase will come in at 5KB/s unless you pay a monthly subscription.
Guess what? It would never happen for obvious reasons to steam as a business.

Yeah that type of buisness model is a bunch of BS. Sounds like a money grab to me but people will pay it because there are very few decent train simulators out there and the developers know it. Same thing with TWS coming out with a new version every 2 years and expecting people to buy it again. Same goes for the niche genre of combat flight simulation which I am also into. Those deveopers pull the same crap, it's always a money grab.
Bobby Aug 7, 2024 @ 7:07am
I’m from SimHQ and CombatSim forums of the mid 90s
I owned more or less everything that was released in military simulations for over 20 years.
We were absolutely spoiled and glad to be in its heyday.
Never in a million years did I expect to see the ‘mighty’ Microprose doing EA and ‘lite sims’.

I’m a patient guy, so when serious sales come along -even years down the line- that’s when I might get a sequel.
I have TSW2,3 and 4. Your lucky if the 38-40 DLC AND the base game for 3 and 4 cost me more than £30.
Ever heard of CDKeys? Or Humblebundle? Check them out regularly. You can walk away with stuff that’s not even a quarter of the price on steam. Sure you won’t get the 2hr window, but if you want it and it’s as playable as it’s going to get, you can’t go wrong!

TSW4 Deluxe is £8.99 Steam £39.99
Been buying from them for years. Humblebundle is on steam as well

After some consideration - mainly due to the price and the DLC in the bundles I’m more probably going to get platinum 2022.
It is cheap and I’m not interested in assets etc might try to build something (I did it in Trainz 12) see how far it goes.
Because of Google maps, it’s going to pretty easy to make some rail lines and details using that -which didn’t exist 21 years ago when I built my map and route (off the top of my head!!!)
So I would say get base game and some DLC and try it. It’s not exactly a loss compared to full retail!
A months ticket gives (apparently full speed download)

FCT Benefits:

If you're a regular user of the Download Station, then here are some First Class Ticket benefits you should consider:

There’s no limit to how much or how often you download.
You get priority Download Station access.
Only 1 FCT is needed per account, not per Trainz product.
Most of all, you get vastly increased download speeds!
Once activated, your account will be flagged as a FCT holder. With uncapped download speeds you have unrestricted access to as much of the Download Station as you can handle. And remember, you can store up multiple FCTs and just activate them when you are ready to download.
