Possible to edit sounds and physics?
...so that not (nearly) everything I drive sounds and behaves the same.
So far I am left feeling a little under-whelmed with this whole (trainset) 'sim'...I put a lot of my hard-earned down on this not realising that for anything half-way decent (routes etc) you have to pay again *AND* pay for the privelage of downloading anything else before dying of old age, and then finding out that most of the stuff on the download station are just skins upon skins, routes with like half a mile of tracks, and (for some reason) a very extensive set of aircraft with...yup...hundreds of skins for those too.

Aye...I fell for the advertising and because I don't have access to NASA's supercomputers this game looks and sounds pretty bad no matter what I do with it (can someone explain how I am sat next to some huge diesel engines yet the sound of them are drowned out by a small drizzle of rain that for some reason sounds exactly like rain falling into a large puddle or pond (and don't get me started on that gawd-damned tweeting bird)...oh...and these same huge diesel engines seem to have been fitted to just about every loco...my little class 101 sounds exactly like a Deltic or an HST pulling away (and drives exactly like one too...are they not supposed to be a little slower and have gears?).

If it wasn't for the fact I have blown the best part of 70 or 80 quid on this (in the last few days) and in the hope things would improve with some further tweaking, then it would have been shelved by now and I would be back on my TS2020 where at least you actually feel like you are driving something powerful and heavy and that takes at least some skill to drive.

I do get the feeling this is about train sets rather than train simming so I won't put it away just yet until I've had a look at the editing and camera options...there must be something it's good at.

Regards

Hi WreckLuse68
For the physics (aka the 'enginespec') there are two ways you can do this.

The first is that you can change this within Surveyor by selecting the 'properties' tool (the '?' tool) in the Trains tab, then click on the traincar. In the setting marked 'engine', click on 'default' and then select the desired enginespec in the list.

The other is to manually edit the traincar asset, and the steps are the same for changing the 'enginesound' asset. For items that aren't marked as 'builtin' or 'payware' in the status column in Content Manager, this is relatively easy. Unfortunately this option is not possible for any assets marked 'builtin' or 'payware' in the status column.

To change the enginespec or enginesound, locate the traincar using Content Manager. Once located, right click on the traincar, then go to 'open', then click on 'edit in explorer'.

Now double click on the 'config' or 'config.txt' file, which will open the file in notepad. You will then need to locate the 'enginespec' or 'enginesound' line. This will show an assetID number that will look something like '<kuid:12345:9876>' or '<kuid2:12345:9876:1>' or similar. You will need to change this to the AssetID number of the enginespec or enginesound asset you wish to use.

There are quite a lot of enginespec and enginesound assets available, both on the DLS and from other websites, so you can experiment with this quite a bit.

Note the the enginesound asset will only be specified in locomotives; it is not used for other rolling stock.

The same steps can also be used to change the hornsound (Which has both the horn/whistle, and the bell) to another if you wish to.

Please keep in mind that the vast majority of content for Trainz is made by other members of the community. In many cases, the creators may not have found a more suitable sound at the time, and may not have had the resources to create their own sounds or may not have had the experience to make their own enginespec/physics assets. As such there will be assets, particularly older assets, that use common generic sounds or physics.
