For the physics (aka the 'enginespec') there are two ways you can do this.
The first is that you can change this within Surveyor by selecting the 'properties' tool (the '?' tool) in the Trains tab, then click on the traincar. In the setting marked 'engine', click on 'default' and then select the desired enginespec in the list.
The other is to manually edit the traincar asset, and the steps are the same for changing the 'enginesound' asset. For items that aren't marked as 'builtin' or 'payware' in the status column in Content Manager, this is relatively easy. Unfortunately this option is not possible for any assets marked 'builtin' or 'payware' in the status column.
To change the enginespec or enginesound, locate the traincar using Content Manager. Once located, right click on the traincar, then go to 'open', then click on 'edit in explorer'.
Now double click on the 'config' or 'config.txt' file, which will open the file in notepad. You will then need to locate the 'enginespec' or 'enginesound' line. This will show an assetID number that will look something like '<kuid:12345:9876>' or '<kuid2:12345:9876:1>' or similar. You will need to change this to the AssetID number of the enginespec or enginesound asset you wish to use.
There are quite a lot of enginespec and enginesound assets available, both on the DLS and from other websites, so you can experiment with this quite a bit.
Note the the enginesound asset will only be specified in locomotives; it is not used for other rolling stock.
The same steps can also be used to change the hornsound (Which has both the horn/whistle, and the bell) to another if you wish to.
Please keep in mind that the vast majority of content for Trainz is made by other members of the community. In many cases, the creators may not have found a more suitable sound at the time, and may not have had the resources to create their own sounds or may not have had the experience to make their own enginespec/physics assets. As such there will be assets, particularly older assets, that use common generic sounds or physics.
