Now, if you wanted the medieval era still, Crusader Kings 2 would be your best bet, but it is a lot more complex. If you want a stepping stone, get Realpolitiks.
QuailLover (Doug reference?), thank you very much! I'm going to check all those out.
It's the gameplay I'm most interested in. I love scouting terrioties, build up an army, making allies, maintaining balance in my kingdom, and of course attacking other armies. I like that it's almost all done through a single screen and is more a numbers game, than a visual representation. Anything else you can think of that is similar to that, I'd love to hear about it. Thanks again.
Castles II is one of my favorite games of all time. Crusader Kings 2 scratches the itch big time, and so does the Stronghold Series. Those games are mostly dated, but still very fun. Stronghold games are more resource collecting and very combat focused at times, but it's definitely in the same realm.
By the off chance you never heard of the Total War series, I would HIGHLY recommend that. There are quite a few of them, so I urge you to check out Medieval 2: Total War. That one is also a bit dated, but it is probably my favorite in the series. They have cinematic moments which will remind you of the 'events' in Castles II, and the results are all carried out in quite an amusing style of animation.
Let me know if you ever come across any similar games, and enjoy!
