For example if your T9 requires 150,000 xp, but the B hull to the T8 costs 40,000, you'll need 190,000 free xp
I'm hardly ever skipping a ship anyway. I save my free xp for research bureau resets.
Izumo and Bajie are pretty good. Solid, tough ships with accurate guns.
I had the wrong opinion of those ships when I was quite new to the game, and once I got a bit better (only a bit!), I liked them.
Which mode were you playing in?
Izumo has (slightly) better dispersion and sigma than Amagi, but one less barrel so one fewer dice rolls.
It has substantially faster shells (so easier to lead distant targets) and thus a contributing factor to its much better penetration - but that, combined with the shallower angle of impact, means you're going to get more overpens if you're not taking that into account vs squishy cruisers or turtleback.
Learning the overmatch match-ups and icebreakers will help, as will better positioning.
I wouldn't write off Bajie. She does have better accuracy than Izumo.
