Coal ship to get?
Yep, I'm back with another one. This time I really don't know what to get, U-4501 seems interesting to play but I'm still an ameture at submarines. Of course I'm not using the coupon because I have enough coal to buy a ship full price plus one using the coupon if I feel like it. I won't buy the ships that cost 300k coal though.

What are your choices? What do you like to play class-wise?

Well, I prefer battleships with cruisers and destroyers coming in behind.

This time of year you want the Tier 10s for the Santa Crate certificates. There's always the remote chance you get another awesome ship from the crate.

U-4501 is fine if you like subs and think it's cool.
The coal CVs are both pretty good.

Napoli is considered to be pretty good (can circumstantially help farm some missions with its secondaries too).

Yoshino's popular, but I barely touch it because I quite like Azuma and that's a "proper" premium so better currency earning, etc.

Sherman's very strong, so if you like a smoke-farming DD, it's a good choice and quite distinct from other stuff.
Tromp, and to a lesser extent, Mosvka, are both a bit distinctive and unique - so there can be some mileage in getting those to fill a playstyle hole in your roster.

A lot of the other Tier 10s are good choices, but there's similar in the tech tree, so they're of more limited value.
There's not a massive amount of difference between GKF and Preussen; Salem & Des Moines; Khaba & Delny.

You will want to use your discount certificate on Steel ships if you're going to be able to afford one within the next - what, 6 months?

If you aren't going to be able to use it on a steel ship, then you definitely want to use it on a pricey tier 10 coal ship, because 25% of a big number represents a greater net amount of coal discounted - which is coal you don't have to grind in the future.

Well I paid my $75 for the year and got: Jaeger, Hornet, Lazo, Ashitaka, Collingwood.
And I already have: Malta, GK, Napoli
I had sherman before but feel like groningen does it better and already have that.

Hornet is awesome, especially in ops. Her HE bombs *hurt*.

NAPOLI in it's current form is a bit OP with it's 11.5km secondaries. Put her in a good spot early on with support and you're going to have a fun time. It's not an easy ship to play as it's range is limited comparatively speaking. I ran the Nap all last week and finished the week with 67% WR in Nap...and im no Unicum...50% player.

Already got Napoli long ago, been thinking about Salem though.

Have you got Des Moines? If yes, like Ace says, Salem is basically Des Moines but with a UK BB style mega repair, and you can only take radar OR hydro, not both. A good choice if you like Des Moines if you think that big increase in survivability would benefit you.

Moskva or Brisbane maybe? Both very strong picks as cruisers.

Tromp if you want something completely different to other DD's, it's a fun ship - the airstrikes are great and the torps can be surprisingly effect given you have so few.

Can't get Tromp because I don't have a spare dutch commander for her, same for Brisbane. Moskva is a maybe but a cruiser dedicated to killing other cruisers might be a problem when trying to do other tasks.

"spare"? You know you can share a commander between all your premium ships, yeah? If you've got one trained for a different tech-tree ship you can just drop him into a premium of a different type and build accordingly?

I know, but that means I would have to poach my commonwealth commander from Perth or my dutch commander from Johan De Witt. Prefer to have a commander on hand for any premiums/tech tree and don't have to spend an extra 1mil or 1500 dubloons or even gut a commander from one of my ships already using them.

There's a special dutch captain or two for coal IIRC? Has bonuses that apply to Tromp and the cruisers? Worth getting and slotting in before thinking about ships to enjoy that bonus on Leeuw + eventually tromp.

Moskva is definitely not dedicated to cruiser killing. It's really quite versatile - the ballistics and super radar so it can detect and hit destroyers at substantial ranges, HE for fires on battleships at long range and the gun AP is then more than capable of smashing broadside cruisers.

Excellent ship.

I think the only clash with Tromp (as they lack a tech tree DD line) is the fact that you need a different build for Groningen. So if you have both ships and only 1 decent level commander its an issue.

Looking at it, Tromp doesn't benefit from the airstrike skill buff on the dutch commanders anyway, so although demo expert would be nice on it, you can totally go with a regular commander.

But TBH not sure there's a ton of difference between how I'd build Tromp vs Gron. Even if I was being super pedantic about finding the optimal build, I doubt the choice of skills would be that different - maybe fearless brawler on tromp - but given how much time tromp spends undetected stealth torping and stealth airstriking, not sure that's super essential.

Maybe Demo expert on Gron to make use of the special commander bonus, which is less useful on Tromp, but it's still pretty nice, so wouldn't consider it a deal breaker or anything.

And I suspect people will want the second Dutch commander anyway - as eventually there's gonna be a Dutch Cruiser Supership that wants a commander allocated to it - ideally with buffed airstrikes. And you're not going to want to get rid of a Tier10 that you can be using for lootboxes, etc and already have a CO trained for.
