Hipper -> Roon
Hi Folks,
looking for some advice taking the Roon into battle as I am really struggling with this step up. So far I've had a semi respectable run in the Hipper but its as if the general play style / rules no longer apply. I appreciate being super new to tier 9 also isn't helping but even taking the basics or the odd game focusing on self preservation is resulting in getting wrecked (welcome to tier 9, I guess :) )

Is this just a case of Brute force through a learning curve? or should i find my feet in t9 in another ship?

Cheers.

Get the hull and gun upgrades as soon as possibly and kite, kite, kite. Roon is similar to Nuernberg with most of her guns in the back so you need good ruddershift to dodge well.

German cruiser benefit from propulsion mod 1 massively - if you are fighting at range you can go from reversing to full speed and back again in short amounts of time. Works better than dodging around at full speed (tho would not suggest this for other cruiser lines) and limits your exposure when peeking out from islands.
On Roon and Hindenburg, never hesitate to switch to AP when a target is showing too much side, even if it's a battleship. The HE is good for starting fires and harassing targets too angled to do anything else with, but its damage is anemic. German cruiser AP, on the other hand, hurts. A lot. Getting a 10k salvo or two on a Georgia's upper decks/superstructure will make him think twice about chasing you.

I'm grinding towrads the Roon right now. I really like the Koeningsberg and Nurnberg. I think I like the Hipper too. First match in the Hipper I killed 5 ships (In Co-op but anyway..). The advice in this thread is good and maybe I can add to avoid crossfires at all costs. I saw a guy yesterday sailing straight ahaed into 4 bots with a cruiser, and then "I need help". Well, well...

Hipper i find you can play more aggressive and take risks often due to more torpedo tubes then Roon. Roon is great for kiting and getting fires happening. Hinden can play like both, it is a great ship that can adapt to nearly all situations. Goodluck

I hate my Roon. I think it might be the worst German cruiser I have played.

I did too, at first, trying to play it like it's predecessors until, I started laying back in the beginning and not trying to be so aggressive.
