I have been playing this game for two years and i can honestly say PVP never ceased to suck the whole time. I do get the feeling my purpose for being there is to boost the stats of elite players, and nothing more. Well, us average players DO want something more, so the PVP fanboys are going to have to get over it.
I would have been gone long ago if it were not for the weekly operations, that is the game mode i mostly play nowdays, and the rewards are much better than Co-op, you should try it out!
The only thing that can make Co-op difficult is if your getting 'focussed' by the AI. Now when it comes to focus firing there is NOTHING more ruthless than the AI.... All those AI ships are all making the same calculations who to shoot at first and they do that with 'Borg' efficiency that no human team can match, so this is what you have to keep in mind....
So its the same basic strategy as PVP, you have to use the Islands to minimise how many enemy can fire at you at the same time and dont sail out into positions where they can all focus fire on you.
The other thing with the AI, is it will also chose a ship to focus fire based on the modules and flags you used!
Your sailing next to a freindly ship, which is the same model ship as yours. Lets say the only difference is you have a flag or module mounted that they do not.... AI is going to focus fire YOU and your freind will remain untouched. If there are 10 AI ships, all 10 AI ships will shoot at YOU, this is how the cuthroat basted AI works.
Edit: before i realised the above, i was getting an eye twitch from the persecution complex i was developing from the AI chasing and shooting at me all over the map and ignoring everyone else!!! hehehehe
Reading your post, i think your main issue really is the slowness of the grind, and we all know that is a big issue, no one here will dissagree!
When you first start playing the game, there are quite allot of things happening to keep you interested, but after a certain period of time, you enter the 'doldrums' where there is just NOTHING happening and it drags on and on and on and on andonanoanaoanaoanaoanaoanon - most people just quit the game and move on to something else.
Wows definately need to find more ways to keep feeding people short term and medium term goals no matter what stage of the game you are at.
As for the rewards for co-op, personally i feel that they are not too far off being competative with Random, and the main reason is 'time'..... you can potentially play 3 or 4 Co-op games for every 1 Random game! And on top of that, a good winning result in a co-op battle, is not too far of, or even exceeding the rewards of a losing Random battle. And another thing, if you use valuable signals and Cameo in Co-op, your almost guarranteed to get a good payout from them, but in Random you have only a 50% chance of wasting all those valuable things.... so in view of that, you would be crazy to take valuable signals and cameo into Random!
(Actually, the best place for valuable signals and cameo are the weekly operations!)
Hehehe, yea, everyone knows about the grind though! lol, not everyone appreciates that some players like me are just average players and always will be, but still, average players want to be more than damage points for Elite players, we do actually want to have 'fun' as well, as shocking and surprising as that may be! lol, so in my case, i dont do much PVP at all, (anymore) mostly i do the weekly operations.
As far as i am aware, the term 'fanboys' has no numerical association attached to it.
And with the weekly operations, the game has evolved to be far more than just PVP, and i much appreciate it!, otherwise, like i said, i would have been gone a long time ago.
