There can be other ways of gaining them
I'd sell ships below tier 5 to begin with (Sometimes you get them during events and stuff) They usually can't do quests.
It's not really worth it to buy more as you end up getting more as time goes on.
I have probably well over 100 vacant slots but I do remember them being limited at the very start.
Also don't sell premium or special ships, just tech tree ones
Ships acquired via Coal, Steel, and Research Points come with slots.
You can buy extra slots for doubloons.
I personally sell anything that isn't a premium ship that exists below T5 once I've gotten past it. Because the majority of quests do not count ships in those tiers as valid for progress. Nor do they contribute to flake events the way ships at T5+ do.
