Are you being spotted ?? If This is the case you are using it wrong, ships have "Smoke fire Penalties" alone with consumables such as Radar and Hydro which can detect you!

Learn them and use smoke to Farm from Distance
Good luck!

Look up your ships detectability while firing main guns in smoke
There's a distance where it works and when people can spot you
Otherwise smoke is great for going dark to try and slip away

You can only "see through" smoke if a teammate (including their planes, for the time being) has line-of-sight against the targets behind it; or a teammate has detected the ship(s) in it with Radar / Hydro / Proximity spotting (including being within the target's smoke-firing-penalty radius).

If you use smoke correctly (accounting for enemy positioning and consumables) you will be undetected and thus able to free farm with the enemy struggling to blind fire you as you manoeuvre.

As a general rule of thumb, the larger your gun, the larger your smoke firing penalty.

That's why DDs and CLs benefit from smoke so much. CAs with smoke can get themselves exposed if they aren't careful.

Enemy use a radar thing, when they do that u done.

Also be careful about spamming in your smoke people will often blind fire in smoke or torpedo it just to try to hit you

OK Quick Tip, Learn the ranges on Radar from the different ships available and you can then set your smoke just out of their range and can either draw them into the open to try and radar you opening them up to cross fire or damage or more importantly farm them down or target something else!

Good luck!

That's why you keep track of which ships have radar before the match starts (can mouse over their consumables as you're loading in to read the tooltips), taking note of the ranges of those radars, and you bait them out at max range so that you can then go back in whilst they're on cooldown; or engage from outside of radar range where possible; or else just avoid them entirely.

This is very basic play/counter-play stuff for ships with smokescreens.

Same goes for keeping track of what can torpedo you out of your smokescreen and countering them before you try to smoke farm.

If you're trying to smoke-farm, you first try to create the circumstances where it is safe to do so before you blind yourself and lock yourself into a highly telegraphed position by popping the smoke.
If you're merely using smoke to disengage, then you are careful not to over-commit to situations where something like radar (or plane spotting from a CV) can prevent you from disengaging safely.

No problem.
Can see some very typical straightforward DD smokescreen farming here:

My most recent vids on my YouTube channel are grinding out the Commonwealth cruiser line - which uses smoke. Admittedly they use "crawling smoke" that isn't the same as a regular smokescreen, but the principles at work are the same.

Can see me using a short-duration smokescreen here:

Another thing to be aware of:

The enemy can see on the minimap where you were last spotted. That is an enormous help for blindfiring. If you are planning to smoke-farm your opponents do this:

1: Slow down
2: Start smoke generator when your speed is down to 1/4
3: Wait for another 2 seconds
4: Start firing
5: Keep moving forward and/or backwards te enlarge your smoke area and to make it more difficult to blindfire you, but no faster than 1/4 speed and of course be aware when your smoke generator stops and then stay inside your smoke.

If you are moving faster than 1/4th, you are constantly moving out of your smoke before a new puff covers you again.
If you start firing before you are permanently covered by smoke, the enemy will have that last known position on you.
If you sit completely still in your smoke, they will see where the tracers of your ammo start and use that to hit you without actually seeing you.

(6 be at an angle where you are just able to use all your guns, but have the smallest profile towards potentially incoming torpedos. Also make sure your bow is poited away from the enemy so that if you need to make speed to dodge torps causing you to leave the smoke, you leave it towards the "safe side" and remain unseen.)

(7 press RMB regularly to maintain situational awareness. you can just keep shooting while doing that, your guns remain locked on the target)

If you arent sure of your smoke firing penalty then pressing "H" when in a match gives you a lot of your ships characteristics including what range you will be spotted at if you fire your main guns. As for radar its just something you have to try and remember. The longest range radar is 12km.
