Remove karma system entirely
It just gets abused by sweaty players. You can be reported for doing too well, for being new, for playing badly, for asking for others to communicate...

Apart from reporting cheaters and chat abusers, the karma system serves absolutely NO purpose whatsoever.

It's doing it's job. It keeps those "sweaty" players from contacting support to actually report players who aren't doing anything wrong - and thereby waste support's time.

That is it's primary purpose. You can't be affected in game by it at all aside from the bad language - and then only if you've used the trigger words.

The report drop-down specifically lists poor play as a reason you can pick.

And I think the vast majority of "new" players, and a lot of players who delude themselves into thinking they are contributing more than they actually do, would benefit from taking pause and going "hmmm, did I do something wrong there? Perhaps I should review my choices, and maybe solicit the opinion of people who know better".

I certainly think the karma system would benefit from being weighted when it comes to "poor play" reports - inexperienced or poorly performing players' reports having no effect on better players; good players reports / commendations having greater impact.
Limiting it to "one poor performance report per player" so it's not as spammable would probably be a good idea - ideally make it a toggle so that if a player redeems themselves after you do a report you can undo it before the match ends.
Some of the other reporting categories (misbehaviour in chat and AFKing) probably shouldn't be limited - or else you should get the AFK reports instantly refunded if the automated AFK checker goes "yep, fair cop 'guv", because it's easy to come across more AFKers than you have reports to issue - and it's a drag having to then manually submit reports to support once you've run out.

Because, yeah, I've had totally incompetent low battle count players trying to criticise my hard-carry plays and uphill struggles because they don't understand why I'm making the game-winning choices - and noticed my karma subsequently go down.

But I don't think there's a massive issue with the core concept. Certainly I don't think people get reported for "doing too well" (maybe for playing subs / CVs).

As for "asking others to communicate" - I'd rather they didn't, TBH.
You only have to look at divisions coordinating misplays and thus throwing harder than they would've as individuals to realise how detrimental it is for people to encourage others to compound their mistakes.

And surely if you're not a "sweaty" player, then you don't care about the karma system and can just ignore it?
There's mods that remove it. So if you're not particularly good and aren't interested in feedback or improving to the point where you're not being criticised as often, then you do have the option of not being made aware of it.

Little addendum: Using the karma system doesn't really do anything to perceived cheaters. You'd need to send a report to support about their misbehaviour with a full description of what you think happened and attaching the replay.

Other than that, the karma system is mostly there for giving players a way to vent, if you ask me.

Personally I like being able to give a tangible "well done" in the form of a +1 to someone who played well or was helpful. I also appreciate having the ability to report people who are being unpleasant in chat or who actively sabotaged their team etc. People who consistently play well will tend to have decent karma totals. People who are toxic, or consistently play badly wont. Sounds like its working as intended.

As above, you could just ignore it if it bothers you that much.

I was in my destroyer 5-6 km from pinata ship and sent 8 torpedoes against it. But pinata ship triggered its shield so no damage. Players said report dd for poor play. As if I could know it would be indestructible. Wonder how many did report me hehe

I have been reported for that - I'm sure of it.
The time that stands out I dev struck two cruisers back to back. Neptune and Mino. One said I was hacking I said something like "lol, you were broadside sailing in a line" and I got 3 reports. The division had 3 people in it. Too many other coincidences like that too.

Yesterday I played pretty darn well, was not toxic and lost several karma. One day it goes up, one day it goes down.

Hackusations makes sense - maybe I'm splitting hairs by distinguishing between those and - I dunno, getting reported for jealousy or out of spite.

I'm sure it doesn't happen as often as other things. I think it's largely a toxic thing because it is true that the good players do tend to pile up karma. If there were that many reporting for good plays, they wouldn't have the karma.

It's really kind of a dumb system aside from the idea that it saves support from combing over hundreds of frivolous reports.

thats karma

The Karma system is pretty useless, it's a placebo so the people who get blown up, play a class people disagree with, don't listen to others or any other reason; have someone to complain to.

Other than chat violations I doubt anyone cares.

as a Karma Farmer, simply put: be polite, wish people GL & HF and say +1 to a ship and give them a compliment if they play well or help you out! Reward Team work or a Carry .... in return you will get complimented, if you see someone do something silly or not right just bite your tongue and ask for support from them, if they refuse and then proceed to die 1st its a report, sometimes that crazy looking play opens up a broadside for you! Just do not go "crazy" in chat and if needed use the report as a way of venting!! Stops hassle or Fan Mail... and trust I get a lot of Fan mail from haxcusations! haha

If you get accused cause you are bad at playing then that means you need git gud.

If you are accused cause you played too good, then that feels more like an achievement than something to be mad about. Although for some it might feel like someone harassed you but look on the brightside, you so good that they think you cheated.

If you are accused cause they just hate you, then just give the love back and report them too. :steamhappy:

it's a weaponized form of harassment and you know it. i got reported for beating people. that's bullshniz. You know it. I guess the devs just want more weaponized salt.

it's not useless. the less karma you have the fewer reports you can make against legitimate rule breakers like AFK noobs and racists. Having a "plays poorly" report option is utter trash and sanctioned harassment by developers.
