I guess £4.22 to buy a captain isn't the end of the world and will save my sanity :)
Doesn't change the voices. The gear icon only hides camo's.
You get used to that actually. Soon, you will be speaking japanese and german in no time! Only a few phrases though.
I think I'll try to get used to National and learn the phrases over time.
Via the standard settings you can't sadly get an anime captain to speak english without using National. Unless you have a captain with a unique voice set (eg. Jingles or one of the WarHammer ones) you can switch to.
Thankfully there is a workaround
Go to: https://aslain.com/index.php?/topic/2020-download-%E2%98%85-world-of-warships-%E2%98%85-modpack/
and get the Aslain WoWs mod pack.
Once you have it and run it (follow instructions) you will be met with a massive list of mods.
Scroll down until you reach the sound section of the mod list and look for the tick boxes next to the three mods - "ARP to normal" - "HSF to normal" and AZUR Lane to normal", tick these boxes and then click the next button.
Follow rest of installation instructions and if done properly the anime voice lines will have been replaced by standard English voice lines.
Either that or from the same section get the Mermaid Wrath voice pack to give you another option in the voices section of WoWS audio options to have a female English speaking crew in an Anime style (personally my favourite voice pack in the game due to the daftness of some of the lines eg. when set on fire "put away those marshmallows and get that fire out (distant sound of multiple awwwwww's)" and upon sinking an enemy Carrier "Ha, Maybe that Carrier should have learned to 'just dodge' "
