If you do not have a constant upkeep of premium time, then when you do have it is the time to play the hell out of the game and use you boosters to get the most out of them and make grinding ships quicker and earn more money.
Retraining captains gets more expensive the higher level they are - whether or not you move a captain up in line or train from scratch a captain for every ship as you go up is a matter of preference as to whether you feel like a branch of a nation tree is worth playing at lower levels or not, but again it gets a bit more expensive the higher the level of the captain, but you can always also do it the harder way and play him as a no level captain until he hits the XP needed to satisfy "retraining".
You can use a favourite ship to grind credits, and to a lesser extent "free XP" (the green XP in the top right), but it's not optimal.
At low tiers even premium ships don't really generate a lot of resources.
Yup. Once you're in the late-game grind you can generate enough FXP to just grab an entire line - but that's really years of pretty hard grinding down the line.
A decent tier 9 premium ship can help you grind a lot harder (they get the best rewards, more or less) if you want to play that instead of working through the lines, but that's an expense, and it's repetitive and not as informative or as fun as playing the lines properly.
Generally speaking this is never worth doing - it's one of the least efficient monetisation systems in the game.
A small proportion of all "ship" XP you earn is converted to "free xp" which can be spent on pretty much anything that requires XP (commander XP, ship XP, modules, etc).
The guy was mistaken though: Best use of FXP is saving it all up so that when you unlock a new ship you can research the modules straight away and not have to play against the enemy in a stock ship.
There is a circumstantial case to be made for brute-forcing a Tier 10 ship with FreeXP in time for the anniversary / Xmas events, because Tier 10 ships give you excellent rewards with a chance of getting rare and valuable premium ships from the crates they provide, etc. But you're not in a position to get enough FXP for that any time soon - it's far more time-efficient to just grind the line regularly - because as you move up the lines, your XP (and credit, and FXP) earning potential goes up.
If you've got a small amount of premium time, concentrate on brute-forcing your regular grind. The credits, the ship XP, the progress, the FXP, the captain XP is all going to come to you.
You want to be getting Coal crates from your daily crate missions - and saving that up to get the special captains that have buffed abilities from the armory.
Events will frequently give you partially-trained cosmetically unique commanders, often with different voice lines (go into your sound options, set the voices to extended to hear other people's custom commanders in game). So no point in grabbing fresh 0 / low point commanders unless you've got no other option.
So really, there's no reason to get super excited about a rando default commander one way or the other.
For you, as a beginner with not special commanders, just concentrate on moving one commander up per each line (and a separate one up a sub-branch if the line splits and you want to grind that too, obv) so that they cumulate XP and skills. You don't want to be starting a fresh commander in higher tier matches, by the time you're at T6 you want to have a CO with at least 10 points working through the lines, ideally you'd get that even sooner.
Retraining just slaps an orange bar - the XP value of the bar depends on the number of skill points the commander has managed to unlock - on the commander and stops their skills from working in any tech tree ship until you've ground out that much XP on them - at which point they go back to normal, keeping all the skills and XPs you've accumulated on them so far.
If you have a compatible premium ship (so one from the same nation) - you can swap any commander into that without needing to retrain them, and their skills will work for that premium ship even while they are grinding through that orange bar.
So it's a free way of grinding that orange bar "retraining XP" out without suffering the debuff of losing access to the CO skills.
You can also use FreeXP *or* "elite commander XP" (the blue XP in the top right of the Assign Commander menu) to speed up retraining - but with low ranked captains retraining's really quick anyway - there's a button in the barracks to "complete retraining", which only uses up however much co XP you need to finish it off.
So if you've had a few battles whilst debuffed and are just a little bit short of completing the retrain - can click that button and only spend the small remaining amount of the orange bar's worth of resources.
I have not bought any crates besides the small ones for 150 doubs under Gatherings by the Fireplace and I've picked up at least 3 slots that I remember from those small boxes.
Other than that if you have tier I to IV ships that you don't need anymore to grind out another line and don't really like, you can just sell these as they do not count against Snowflake events and you can't usually use them for any missions either. Just keep a few, at least one per tier and class, that you like.
Yeah, very annoying that they do that to you. At least it wasn't costing you doubs, though. And later down the line you can always liquidate your commanders and get some of the XP they've got back if you want to pour it into special commanders - although that will cost you.
If there's any line you're not really grinding, just get rid of the tier 1s - it costs nothing to get them back, and by the time you get back to that line you'll have earned a ton of free slots just from random events and drops and stuff.
Also feel free to sell off any ships you're done with - unless you've got an absolute favourite you love to bits, there's no reason to keep low tier ships once you've unlocked all the subsequent tech tree branches that specific ship gives access to.
You only start getting anniversary / xmas gifts from tier 5, and it's only T5+ that can do missions, etc - so there's zero point in collecting lower tier ships apart from personal gratification.
In terms of grind strategy, focusing on just one line you like is economically optimal - because higher tier ships (not counting T11s, which are credit-sinks) generate the best rewards - the sooner you get them, the easier you grind missions and get bonuses, etc.
But rushing one line DOES mean you can get in "over your head" in terms of not giving yourself time to learn the game mechanics and fundamentals at lower tiers.
Also I guess the fact that I've only played up to T4 explains why none of the combat missions and seasonal challenges are available ;-)
For example I focused on the Japan and German lines in my grind early when I started playing(this year actually a few months ago)because I noticed the Battleships of both play opposite to each other, Japan has lots of long range Battleships where as German Battleships tend to play more close range with their main guns and secondaries. Germany also has a submarine line where as Japan doesn't(as of current writing.) Both sides have a Carrier line but are also different in the squadrons they have.
Now i have T7 ships of both of those nations and also some T6 and T7 ships of some US and Italian ships.
