Tips for getting an aircraft carrier with WW2 planes and not WW1 biplanes?
Is there a way to get a carrier with nice looking WW2 planes without too much grind or money? Seems like HMS Furious is only tier VI, but it has a mix of biplanes and WW2 bombers.

I currently have the first tier US AC with crappy WW1 biplanes. It will take me FOREVER to grind all the way to the last one, and there's no good WW2 for sale for a decent price.

[EDIT] I now see you can upgrade planes to more modern ones. That's cool, I will work my way to that.

T4 carriers are just not great, but at the same time T4 ships have crap anti-air. Best suggestion is to just play in Randoms instead of Cooperative. And it doesn't take anywhere near as long as you might think assuming you actually get good at playing carriers.

And yes carriers typically have plane upgrades in place of the the usual upgrades to propulsion and weapons that regular surface ships have.

As above, coop is really not a great place to grind carriers (if thats the mode you are playing) because the games tend to be over so quickly. The grind looks bad because you are jumping from T4-6 in one go so obviously its more xp to do so. Most T6s have more modern looking planes. Ranger in particular has some nice plane models.

Also can't help but notice that biplanes were in fact in use during WW2, particularily carrier based. Just ask the Bismarck.
It took quite a while until those were gone from active military service.
