If you have all the low tier ships, you get to pull from the higher tier (lower drop rate ships) instead; ditto for the super rare ships at the top.
As new lower tier ships get added to the pool every year or so, if you don't have those ships, you're more likely to pull one of them than one of the good ships.
If you've pulled all the junk ones, then you're adding the chance you would've had of getting those junk ships to the chances of getting a better quality one - making that much more likely.
So I'm guessing you've not been keeping up with clearing out the trash out of the armoury / premium shop / events etc this year, so are pulling them now.
5 ships is on the low side for *Mega* containers, so you've been unlucky (unless you've got premium time or steel or something which are in the drop pool with rare / hightier ships IIRC?) - normally you'd be looking at a minimum of 6 ships for 60 mega containers, but again - it's gambling so bad luck will be a factor.
Thx for the response. I did get 10000 doubloons, so that counts as another ship I suppose ...
I usually make the effort to clear out the armoury / premium shop of any low-cost ships that are in the prize-pool specifically to improve the quality of the ship drops.
The bi-annual (and occasional bonus ones) coupons are a great way of doing this, but you do need to keep track of what you expect to pay for any given ship vs the cost of it being one of the ~2 minimum you'd expect to pull from a stack of 20 mega crates.
Thanks, will do in future!

Tone is really unique - IIRC out of the hybrids it gets a bit of stink, but I still think plane spotting makes it super valuable in general.
Krons is "fine" - it's pretty tanky. The guns can troll you a bit, but it's a /pretty/ tanky supercruiser that, if the guns roll well, can delete stuff with AP. IIRC it's HE against DDs wasn't as bad as I'd been led to believe as well.
Kamikaze! That's a super-rare, so that's noice.
Bit of a weird one - in that it's an OP seal-clubbing beast, but good for farming missions IIRC?
I got my Kami R out of a super container a few months back - got regular Kami out of Xmas crates last year or the year before.
I do wonder if people who pull Kamis (or Nikolais!) are like :I wanted Smalland:
I had no idea ;) will take her for a spin :D
All nice ships there! S Thunder's in the "fine, but nothing super special" category IIRC. I love it for the unique camo - no idea if it gets the special event camo if you get it from the lootboxes?
Alliance is incredibly unique and pretty rare IIRC - because lootboxes is currently only way to get it? The insane homing on the torps is game-breaking.
As I said in other thread - Ochakov gets some stink (guns bit underwhelming compared to Chapy, IIRC?), but I found her to be rock-solid. Good radar, can punish DDs, nice and nimble.
I rarely ülay subs. so I have to test Alliance!
